Oregon Upsets Oregon State’s Clear Run to the Roses
December 2nd 2008 07:11
65-38. Not exactly what anyone expected. Anyone. Oregon State was on the verge of clinching its first Rose Bowl bid in 44 years. No one knew that more then in-state rival Oregon.
Oregon State boasted the 2nd best defense in the Pac-10 – allowing only 289.6 yards per contest. Too bad no one told Oregon that. Oregon put up 200 yards in the 1st quarter alone. They had amassed 442 at the half. The Ducks finished with 694 net yards for the game. As far as the 103 total points goes – it was a Civil War record. If the Ducks ultimate goal was to throw a wrench in the Beaver Rose Bowl party – they succeeded.
Riding a six game win streak, and an 8 game home win streak, the Beavers had previously been firing on all cylinders. One of those cylinders, JaQuizz Rodgers, was a scratch for this game however. Rodgers injured his shoulder the previous week in a Beaver’s win against Arizona. Rodgers was the Pac-10’s leading rusher – averaging 113.9 a contest – and 12th in the nation. Obviously, without Rodgers, the Beavers were already taking an offensive hit. Beaver QB, Lyle Moevao did set a career high in touchdown passes with five.
The Ducks were paced on the ground offensively by Jeremiah Johnson (219 rushing yards, 1 TD) and LeGarrette Blount (112 yards rushing, 1 TD) – and through the air by QB Jeremiah Masoli (11-17 for 274 passing yards with 4 total TD’s). Also, the two Moevao interceptions were returned for TD’s in the contest.
Overall, the Civil War record stands in favor of the Ducks – 56-46-10. However, the Ducks had not been victorious in Corvallis since 1996. It took double overtime last season in Eugene for the Beavers to come out on top and snap a 10-game home team winning streak.
In one of the more competitive in-state rivalries in the nation, this game didn’t disappoint. The Ducks not only won the game and muddied the Rose Bowl path for the Beavers (Oregon State still gets the nod if UCLA can pull the upset over USC), but they may have finally settled an ironic score with the Beavers – in 2000, the Beavers upset the Ducks 23-13 to knock the Ducks out of the Rose Bowl.
