2009 NFL Mock Draft: First 20 Picks

January 14th 2009 00:10
With all but four teams turning their full attention to the 2009 NFL draft, here is an early mock draft for the first 20 picks in the 2009 NFL Draft. Based solely on team needs, this mock draft doesn't assume any trade ups or downs. As the time draws nearer, and situations change, I will update the board as I see fit.

#1 Detroit Lions

Team Needs: QB, DL, OL

Obviously this franchise is starting over - from the top down. With the success Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco brought to their teams this year as rookies - the choice is pretty clear.

Pick: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma

#2 St. Louis Rams

Team Needs: OL, DB, WR

The Rams need to get the offense back on track. That starts with getting Marc Bulger more time to throw the ball.

Pick: Andre Smith, OT, Alabama

#3 Kansas City Chiefs

Team Needs: OL, LB, QB

There's a very good chance the Chiefs trade out of this pick. However, getting some protection on the line is a must for the Chiefs.

Pick: Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi

#4 Seattle Seahawks

Team Needs: WR, OL, QB

If no one trades up to take Michael Crabtree at #3, it would be nearly impossible for the Seahawks to leave him on the board.

Pick: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech

#5 Cleveland Browns

Team Needs: LB, DB, WR

Their defensive unit was lacking a spark. The offense will come together in time, but they need a fire plug to anchor the defense.

Pick: Rey Maualuga, LB, USC

#6 Cincinnati Bengals

Team Needs: WR, QB, RB

With the status of Ocho Cinco and Housh up in the air, it may be tough for the Bengals to let a top WR get by them here (bonus if he can help the special teams unit).

Pick: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri

#7 Oakland Raiders

Team Needs: OL, WR, DL

The potential on offense is there (Russell, McFadden), now if they can get someone in there to give them time to develop the plays.

Pick: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia

#8 Jacksonville Jaguars

Team Needs: LB, DT, DE

The once heralded defensive unit is in need of some help. With Maualuga gone, they go for the next best defensive playmaker.

Pick: Everette Brown, DE, Florida State

#9 Green Bay Packers

Team Needs: DE, DT, WR

In need of some serious help putting pressure on opposing QB's, and with Brown gone - the Pack can't pass up the next best DE.

Pick: Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas

#10 San Francisco 49ers

Team Needs: QB, WR, CB

Pleased to see the defensive trend take shape in front of them, the 49ers quickly snap up a QB to turn things around.

Pick: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia

#11 Buffalo Bills

Team Needs: CB, WR, QB

With the top CB still on the board, the Bills should bite here and bolster their young defensive unit.

Pick: Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois

#12 Denver Broncos

Team Needs: LB, DT, CB

Likely switching to the 3-4 defense, the Broncos need to upgrade at LB. In fact, anyone at LB would be better then any current Bronco LB.

Pick: Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forrest

#13 Washington Redskins

Team Needs: OL, DE, DB

The need for protection outweighs the need for defensive pressure for the Redskins here.

Pick: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

#14 New Orleans Saints

Team Needs: DB, RB, OL

Scoring points in shootouts is not the Saints problem - it's stopping the other teams from scoring just as fast.

Pick: Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forrest

#15 Houston Texans

Team Needs: LB, DB, OL

With Andre Johnson, Matt Schaub and Steve Slaton, this offense will be in most games. They need a defense that will hold the lead.

Pick: James Laurinaitis, MLB, Ohio State

#16 San Diego Chargers

Team Needs: DL, WR, DE

With the top LB's off the board the Chargers still need to bolster their interior - easiest way to do that is to get a big body.

Pick: Terrence Cody, DT, Alabama

#17 New York Jets

Team Needs: RB, QB, DL

Shouldn't stretch here with the top two QB's off the board. The Jets need to have a backup plan for Thomas Jones.

Pick: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia

#18 Chicago Bears

Team Needs: DB, WR, DL

With an aging defense the Bears should look to refresh here. Keeping with smash-mouth Bears style they go for the heavy hitter here.

Pick: William Moore, FS, Missouri

#19 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Team Needs: RB, QB, WR

Cadillac is a huge question mark in the Bucs backfield. With only one RB taken to this point, the Bucs take a flyer here.

Pick: Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State

#20 Detroit Lions

Team Needs: DL, OL, TE

Getting Bradford at #1, the Lions would be wise to use their second 1st round pick on some protection for him.

Pick: Duke Robinson, OG, Oklahoma

The Chiefs have a good young Quarterback, maybe two. But lineman to keep them healthy are indeed a must have for my favorite team.

Nice write up, though I am not sure if the Lions should go with two offensive players in the first round. They need to work on that defense.

If they were smart, they would wait until next year for a QB and go with an O-line man and a linebacker or down lineman on defense.

By the way, I put the link to this article on my site

In all honesty - they might be best off trading their second 1st round pick because they need a lot more then that... If they can get a decent player or two and a mid round pick or two - it might be worth their while to pull that off.

I think this may have been the first mock draft of 2009. First one I saw anyway.

Well... good news. A new version will be out sooner than later. Bradford has decided to stay at Oklahoma...

I don't blame him, of course he will probably end up on a bad team no matter when he comes out, but the Lions are the worst of the worst.

You have the Bills passing on Curry to take a CB? No way, no how. The one place the Bills are stacked with all kinds of young talent is CB. You missed badly on this one.

Sorry, anonymous guy, but I didn't see your mock draft board. Also, if the draft goes exactly as I have laid it out in my mock - I'm quitting my day job and moving to Las Vegas...
