2009 NFL mock draft- 2nd round

February 8th 2009 13:44
Welcome to the 2nd round of my 2009 NFL mock draft. I have a revised copy of the first round of my 2009 Mock Draft, here. I have made one revised copy of the first round and this is my first attempt at the 2nd round. This is the first year I have published a mock draft, so bear with me. I usually do one for my own amusement but the 2009 NFL mock draft is the first one I put out for others to read.

Second round of 2009 NFL Mock Draft

1 Detroit Lions- Andy Levitre OG Oregon State

The Lions having already drafted Andre Smith add another promising young lineman in Andy Levitre of Oregon State. Winning games starts on the line on both sides of the ball. Levitre should be a good run blocker from the get go and a possible week one rookie starter for the Lions.

2 Kansas City Chiefs- Conner Barwin DE Cincinnati

The Chiefs pick the former basketball player for his upside and hope he can develop into a pass rusher of some skill.

3 Saint Louis Rams- Percy Harvin WR Florida

Percy Harvin’s size and durability can be questioned but he is a playmaker who can put points on the board, and fans in the seats. The Rams need big play threats and Harvin can provide that.

4 Cleveland Browns- Herman Johnson OG LSU

The Browns add some much needed bulk in the 6ft 7 385 pound Johnson. If he can keep his weight under control he could be a force for the Browns.

5 Seattle Seahawks- James Davis RB Clemson

The Seattle Seahawks are still trying to replace Alexander, and Davis will give Jones some competition at running back.

6 Cincinnati Bengals- Alphonso Smith CB Wake Forest

Smith may be a tad of a reach this high in the second round, because of his 5ft 9 height. But Smith is a playmaker who is a good tackler despite his size. The Bengals need some defensive players who can make big plays.

7 Jacksonville Jaguars- Shonn Greene RB Iowa

There are some questions about Greene’s smarts and top end speed. But he is a load to bring down and the Jags will be looking to replace Taylor in the RB rotation.

8 Oakland Raiders- D.J. Moore CB Vanderbilt

The Raiders are still looking for DBs after DeAngelo Hall didn’t work out. Smith gives them a young corner to develop.

9 Green Bay Packers- Clay Matthews LB USC

Matthews comes from good stock and the Packers need linebackers for Dom Caper’s 3-4 defense. Adding two in the first two rounds leaves them set for the next few seasons when added to Hawk. This suddenly becomes a strength for the Packers.

10 Buffalo Bills- Larry English DE Northern Illinois

English may be a reach due to being a “Tweener” but the Bills need bodies and English is a football player with a good motor.

11 San Francisco 49ers- Hakeem Nicks WR University of North Carolina

Not a burner which drops him to the 2nd round of the 2009 NFL draft. But Nicks is a football player and will be a solid wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers.

12 Miami Dolphins- Fili Moala DT USC

Moala fills a need by adding a young defensive tackle. At 6ft 5 and around 295 pounds, he has room to bulk up to be a better hole plugger.

13 New York Giants- Donald Brown RB Connecticut

I think the Giants will lose Ward or Jacobs in free agency and they love having lots of running backs. Brown will be a good spot player in this rotation of backs for the Giants.

14 Houston Texans- Jason Phillips LB TCU

Phillips will help shore up a linebacking core that didn’t play that great in 08. He can probably play any of the linebacker spots for the Texans.

15 New England Patriots- Rashad Johnson Safety Alabama

With Harrison possibly retiring the Patriots need some young legs at the position. Johnson is smart enough and tough enough to start as a rookie and play well.

16 Denver Broncos- Danny Beckwith LB LSU

Beckwith will start right way at one of the linebacker spots. He is fast and football smart in addition to being a fine tackler.

17- Chicago Bears- Mike Mickens CB Cincinnati

A nice addition to the Bears secondary though he is a tad slow for the position, he is a solid player.

18 Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Darius Heyward-Bey WR Maryland

The Bucs need a good young wide receiver and Bey fits the bill of tall athletic receivers who are the trend in the NFL now.

19 Dallas Cowboys- Joe Burnett CB Central Florida
The Cowboys need Db’s in the worst way and Burnett will fill a spot. He is a good kick returner and can tackle something the Cowboys need badly.

20 New York Jets- James Laurinaitis LB Ohio State

More weapons for Rex Ryan and his 3-4 defense. He is strong in all aspects of the game and will be a rookie starter.

21 Philadelphia Eagles- Jamon Meredith OT South Carolina

Meredith has room on his 6ft 5 inch frame to add a few pounds if needed. The Eagles are looking of O linemen in Free Agency, so if they find one this pick may change.

22 Minnesota Vikings- Darius Butler CB- UCONN

Good tackler despite his smallish 5 ft 11, 185 pound frame. Butler is a playmaker as a returner and will help the Vikings pass defense.

23 Atlanta Falcons- Sen’Derrick Marks DT Auburn

Marks has been timed at under 5.0 in the 40 yard dash, he adds a nice young DT for the Falcons rotation.

24 Miami Dolphins- Nate Davis QB Ball State
The Dolphins now have a fine young prospect to groom behind Pennington for a couple of years.

25 Baltimore Ravens- Derrick Williams WR Penn State

The Ravens need help at receiver and Williams will provide that. I was temped to go LB again in this 2009 NFL mock draft, but they need help on offense as well.

26 New England Patriots- Kraig Urbik OL Wisconsin

Urbik is big and can play guard or tackle and the Patriots like versatile players.

27 Carolina Panthers- Kyle Moore DE USC
The Panthers will probably trade Julius Peppers and get into the first round. Either way they need D line help and Moore would help make up for the loss of Peppers.

28 New York Giants- Brian Robiskie WR Ohio State

Robiskie adds another tall target for Manning as the Giants add another skill position player.

29 Indianapolis Colts- Alex Mack C Cal

The Colts need younger and better linemen. Mack is the best center in the draft and can play guard until Jeff Saturday retires or leaves the team.

30 Tennessee Titans- Cody Brown DE UCONN
Brown may do better in a 3-4 as he is a tweener, but the Titans need D line help and Brown can rush the passer.

31 Arizona Cardinals- Patrick Chung S Oregon

Great tackler and will be a special teams demon for the Cardinals. Maybe not a rookie starter but he will get on the field on defense.

32 Pittsburgh Steelers- Trevor Canfield G Cincinnati

Canfield has that nasty attitude that the Steelers love, and will help rebuild a bad offensive line .
