A crazy weekend for football!

September 29th 2008 00:11
College
Anyone who knows only a little bit about football knows this was a wild weekend. The weekend got off to an early start Thursday when unranked Oregon State knocked off No. 1 USC 27-21.

Anytime a Top-10 team is defeated, it shakes up the ranking but this weekend saw three other teams lose. No. 3 Georgia lost to Alabama who had already climbed to No.8 and this puts them in the Top-5.

No. 4 Florida, and No. 9 Wisconsin lost--both to unranked teams.

We can go on--No. 16 Wake Forest lost to Navy, No. 20 Clemson lost to Maryland, No. 22 Illinois lost to Penn State, No. 23 East Carolina lost Houston, and No. 24 TCU lost to Oaklahoma .

Just for the record--my beloved Mountaineers of WVU got back on the winning track by beating up on cross-state rival Marshall 27-3. If WVU is going to do anything this year, it should have been 47-3.

No doubt, the fall of the mighty this weekend is a result of the often mention parity of the NCAA and a result of limiting the amount of scholarships.

One has to wonder if Penn State is the first victim of this parity. Despite their rise this year, they've been down for several years although part of their problem has to be because they entered Big-10 play where EVERY game is like the bowl game they got up for every New Year's Day.

Pro
I think I made a mistake by watching the Cleveland-Cincinnati game. I thought if the Browns had any chance of living up to preseason hype and finally getting untracked, it would be against another team with no wins yet this season.

After watching, now I know why both teams were 0-3! By half time it was only 6-3 with neither team taking control and before you think it was a defensive battle, think again. It was almost as if NEITHER team wanted to win!

Cleveland took control (sort of) in the second half to pull out a 20-12 victory but I have to wonder if starters were worried that fans were wanting back-ups and decided to get the lead out???????

Let's hope the Baltimore-Pittsburgh game is more entertaining. AND--let's hope Baltimore can give the Steelers a little competition for the AFC Central!

James. my knowledge of football is roughly equivalent to my knowledge of fishing, that should give you a 'wee' clue.

There has to be some fun in this one, I'll be looking forward to that, you old salt.

I really hated to see Wake lose. I am the rare fan who does not hate other teams. My main team is the University of North Carolina but I pull for any college in NC.

I'm sort of like you, Randy, except when Notre Dame is involved. Then, I automatically root for the other team! *L*

If it gets to the point, like last year, that almost every No. 2, team gets beaten, it'll be interesting! I used to be pro fan but the past couple of years have gotten me more into college ball. It seems like the odds for a come-from-behind victory are greater!!

College games can be awesome if it is a rivalry game. But I like pro due to playoffs and a clear cut champion who wins it on the field.

I don't like the NFL at all, and I have really tried to. The problem is I became a college football fan first, and so I see becoming a NFL fan as moving backwards in terms of the level of drama/excitement. I also can't imagine sitting around all day on Saturday watching TV, and then coming and doing it again on Sunday. Then there's the problem of not being able to muster up a deep attachment to any NFL team like the built-in one to the Michigan Wolverines, having been at the school when I became a fan and, thus, being unable to escape Michigan football questions, comments, fanatics, etc.

I think this is going to be another one of those seasons, where every week ranked teams are dropping like flies.

It is odd for me to try to pull for the Carolina Panthers who are an hour away. I was a Chiefs and Cowboys fan for so long.
