The Michael Vick saga continues
November 17th 2008 03:22
Anyone who follows pro football very much probably knows all about Michael Vick, the Atlanta Falcon quarterback who is currently serving time for a dog fighting conviction. It's no secret that he thinks he can play somewhere after his release from prison.
Let's be realistic. He'll be around 30, have two years of rust on him, and who will want to take that chance? The Dallas Cowboys seem to be a harbor for bad seeds and he'd fit right in but Tony Romo is their quarterback at the moment and Vick is enough of a competitor that he would surely rather go some place where he's practically guaranteed a starting job.
On the other hand, he was never that great! With a quarterback rating of just under 76, his abilities often hinged on his feet even as his style was falling out of favor and quarterbacks were becoming bigger and true pocket passers to boot.
Although I'm certainly NOT a Michael Vick supporter, I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that the financial rewards of turning pro helped him decide to leave college early in an effort to help his family. ESPN later reported that Vick used part of his NFL and endorsement money to buy his mother a home in upscale Suffolk, Virginia.
Somehow though, this feel good story turned sour. In April of 2007, an elaborate dog fighting complex was discovered which led to criminal investigations, tons of negative publicity, suspension from the Atlanta Falcons, and criminal charges. Finally, in the summer of 2007, a U.S. federal district court convicted Vick of criminal conspiracy and sentenced him to serve a 23-month prison sentence. Right now, he's in Federal custody in Leavenworth, Kansas.

To give you an idea of how far he's fallen, according to Yahoo sports, Michael Vick made 15 million dollars in 2006 from professional football and endorsements. Now, he's making less than $13 a month. Let's round that off and say he's making 150 bucks a year.
I wonder how much of that 15 million he invested.
Here's what Vick's attorneys have to say.

A shame indeed! Other people must think he'll be back. I was surprised to find surprised to find so much on the Internet this past week. If nothing else, his story would make an interesting TV movie.
