The Falcons have had an amazing season coming out of the dump of last year’s season. Rookie Coach Mike Smith and Rookie Quarterback Matt Ryan have taken the league by storm. The Falcons have a good offense ranking 10th in the NFL with 24.4 points per game. Their attack is really led by Michael Turner who helped the team rank 2nd in rushing yards per game with 152.7. The defense is a bend but don’t break type of unit. They are 11th in points allowed with 20.3 points per game given up. Their 21st ranking in passing yards will hurt them against Arizona.
The Arizona Cardinals also were a surprise team in the NFL during 2008. Matt Leinart was benched for old man Kurt Warner who regained some of his youth. Warner had a season reminiscent of the “Greatest Show on Turf” days with the Rams. Kurt put up 598 passes and completed 401 for 4,583 yards and 30 touchdown passes. Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin (despite a badly broken jaw) are the best wide receiver duo in the League bar none. We also saw a changing of the guard at Running Back where Tim Hightower replaced Edgerrin James. Arizona ranks 4th in points scored with 26.7 and second in passing yards with 292.1 per game. However their running game sucks and ranks last in the NFL with 73.6 yards per game. What may hurt Arizona in the first round of the playoffs is their bad defense. They rank 28th in points given up with 26.6 a game and that won’t cut it in December and January.
But I feel that Atlanta will not be able to contend with the Cardinals passing attack and playing at home the Cardinals will not worry about the weather. I think Arizona will score early and get lead making the Falcons abandon Michael Turner and the running game.
My Prediction is that Arizona wins their first round playoff game, 31 to 24 over the Atlanta Falcons.
