Marion Barber out a breakdown of the Steelers Cowboys Game

December 7th 2008 12:17
Marion Barber’s injured pinky toe has kept him from playing in the very important Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburg Steelers game. It had been originally thought that the Cowboy’s best Running Back would be able to play on Sunday.

This is a serious blow to the chances of Dallas beating the Steelers in a very important game for both teams. The Cowboys will be replacing the injured Marion Barber with little known Tashard Choice; a rookie out of Georgia Tech. Choice has played well in spot duty this season with a 4.9 yards per attempt average on 30 attempts.

Even with Marion Barber Dallas had a tough nut to crack in the Steelers defense which is the best in the NFL in 2008 in almost all categories. Tony Romo will now be an even bigger target for Pittsburg. With less threat of a run, the Steelers will expect pass and tee off on Romo all day long. And having a rookie RB back there in pass blocking is not a good thing for the Cowboys.

Barber isn’t having his greatest year but he has been productive with 870 yards and 7 touchdowns. He has also added 47 pass receptions including a 70 yarder for a touchdown in 2008. He is a good solid workhorse running back who is good at pass blocking and will be missed by the Cowboys. As will rookie Felix Jones who was playing well before a season ending injury.

The Cowboys do get Pacman Jones back today but he wasn’t much of a factor earlier this season before his latest suspension for fighting with a guy hired to keep him from fighting. If Pacman does anything today it would probably be as a punt returner if the Cowboys use him there.

Look for the Cowboys to use short passes to Jason Whitten to make up for the lack of a solid running game. But against this nasty Steelers defense the Cowboys offense may be in for a long day.

The Steelers will do what they always do, run the ball with Willie Parker and Mewelde Moore and throw a few play action passes. The offensive line is bad at pass protection but pretty good at run blocking. I had predicted a Steelers victory before it was announced that Marion Barber will miss the game. So that NFL game prediction looks eve more solid now.

Of course a desperate Dallas team could overcome the loss of Marion Barber and beat the Steelers. They have to if they want to stay in the NFC playoff hunt.

Dallas has no shot at winning the NFC East over the Giants but are a viable Wildcard Candidate. The Cowboys at 8-4 will be competing for a Wildcard Playoff Berth with the following teams, two of which will win their division and thus not be in the mix. Washington at 7-5, Carolina and Tampa at 9-3, and Atlanta at 8-4. Thanks for reading this breakdown of the Dallas Cowboys versus the Pittsburg Steelers game. All stats come from NFL.com.
