It's about time to end the Big East

Although college football is at low profile during NCAA Tournament time, ears perk up when there is talk of Notre Dame joining a major conference.
Let's take that one step further and explore the possibility of a major conference going belly up. For the sake of argument, let's take the assumption that "major" conference means a conference with an automatic bowl bid.
That's exactly the scenario the Big East is going through right now.
Despite the fact the Big East is home to my beloved West Virginia Mountaineers, I'm not sure this would be a bad thing. A Big East team needs to win only its seven conference games to qualify for a major bowl. With colleges playing a 12 game schedule, it's not unfeasible to envision a 7-5 team in the Sugar Bowl!
Demise of the Big East would be nothing new. A few years ago Virgina Tech, Boston College, Miami jumped ship to join the ACC. There has been talk of Rutgers, a so-so school in a so-so conference, joining the Big-10. It's the same case with Syracuse and Pitt. Pitt going to the Big-10 could be a good thing for the school as well as the conference. Along with the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry, football fans would be blessed with a rekindling of the Pitt-Pen State rivalry. That would mean more money for each school as well as the conference.
Where the other schools would end up is still in the air. The ACC or Big-10 make sense from a geographical perspective. Notice the absence of the SEC? Lets face it. Do YOU think a Big East team could cut it in the SEC?
As it stands now, a Big East team gets hot and takes the conference with only semi-attention paid to non-conference games and then gets itself up for a bowl game. After realignment, Big East teams may find every game is as tough a bowl!
