Bowl Game Predictions: BCS
January 1st 2009 19:27
For those of you who read my previous prediction post, I apologize...my crystal ball was not working as well as it has in the past. I hope to do better in my BCS predictions...as well as one non-BCS bonus that I have been asked about.
Now it is time to give my final predictions of the season for the nation's 5 most anticipated games.
Rose Bowl:
#6 Penn State vs #5 USC:
This may be the most entertaining game because it may be the most unpredictable. USC has an NFL caliber defense and an outstanding offense with QB Mark Sanchez. Penn State had one of the best defenses in the Big Ten and one of the nation's most exciting offensive players in QB Darryl Clark. This is also one of the rare instances where USC coach Pete Carrol may not have the coaching edge...I give that to JoePa. I give the Trojans the edge...but I predict that this game will be closer than the experts think.
Penn State 27 USC 31
Orange Bowl:
#12 Cincinnati va # 21 Virginia Tech:
The Bearcats are making their first appearance in a BCS bowl and this game is a signifier of the turnaround that the program has made. Virginia Tech is a BCS perrenial...including a loss to Todd Reesing and the Kansas Jayhawks in the Fiesta Bowl last year. I do not have a lot of background on these teams, but I think that Cincinnati got the luck of the draw by avoiding both the SEC and Big XII in their first BCS appearance. I give the hungry Bearcats the edge.
Cincy 23 Virginia Tech 17
Sugar Bowl:
#7 Utah vs #4 Alabama:
It has been a rough few weeks for the Crimson Tide. First they suffer their only loss of the season to the Florida Gators in the SEC championship...which knocked them out of the BCS title game. Then OT Andre Smith...who is a projected top 5 pick gets suspended from the game. By comparison Utah is riding into this game with all of the momentum...going undefeated and battling through the underrated Mountain West Conference. I think that the Tide find a way to win...but this game has the potential to be an absolute barn-burner.
Utah 31 Alabama 35
Fiesta Bowl:
#10 Ohio State vs #3 Texas:
This is an interesting game because both teams are playing with a chip on their shoulder. Ohio State is determined to prove after two national championship game bombs that they deserved to be feared. Texas believes that they should be playing in the National Championship game over Oklahoma. This may be OSU back Beanie Wells last game...that is some added motivation. This is the stage that Terrelle Pryor has been craving for ever since he graduated from High School. Colt McCoy may be the best gunslinger in the Nation and knowing that he will have WR Shipley back for another season is a boost for his confidence. This game boils down to who has the bigger chip on their shoulder...I give it to the Longhorns.
OSU 21 Texas 38
BCS National Championship:
#1 Florida vs #2 Oklahoma:
This has all the makings of a college football classic. Two great QBs in Florida's TIm Tebow and Oklahoma's Sam Bradford. Two great receiving corps. Two completely high octane offenses. You can debate whether Oklahoma should be in this game, but you cannot debate the offensive firepower that the Sooner's possess. Tim Tebow should have won the Heisman this year and provides the intangibles that make Florida a national championship contender. This game is hard to pick, but I am going to go with the Gators because of those intangibles.
Florida 37 Oklahoma 35
Bonus Non-BCS game
International Bowl:
Buffalo vs Connecticut:
One of our loyal readers has asked me my thoughts on this contest. There are so many storylines going into this game. There is the national stage that is presented for UConn running back Donald Brown who has quietly become the nation's leading rusher, accumulating 1822 yards this season. There is the storyline of the University of Buffalo who ended the perfect season of Ball State in the MAC Championship and came full circle for a program that was considered a joke a couple of years ago. Then there was the saga of Buffalo coach Turner Gill getting snubbed for the Auburn vacancy and the suspicion that it was racially motivated. None of this matters once they get on the field, and I give UConn the edge because of their running attack...but it will be close.
Buffalo 24 UConn 27
Those are my BCS picks. I want to thank all of you for reading my picks for this entire college season. I also want to thank the other writers of Footballdogz.com for giving me a forum to write about one of my true passions. I will be writing consistently for the site but it won't compare to my college football picks.
Until Next Time,
Enjoy the Games,
And have a Happy New Year,
