2009 Dallas Cowboys needs

March 23rd 2009 10:55
The NFL news is pretty much year round these days thanks to the internet and wide range of sports coverage on the television. So if your looking for the Dallas Cowboys 2009 offseason needs, I have just the article for you. This will also cover the Dallas Cowboy 2009 player moves to the time of this writing, which is March 23rd 2009. I will discuss what I think the Dallas Cowboys 2009 offseason needs are in the first part of the article. When that is done I will list the Dallas Cowboys player moves and discuss their ramifications. All the player moves come from NFL.com.

Dallas Cowboys 2009 Offseason Needs

First and foremost the Dallas Cowboys need to work together to make the team play up to its talent level. The release of Terrell Owens may help that effort as he was thought by some to be a cancer in the locker room. Owens is now a Buffalo Bill and very far from Texas.

The 2nd biggest 2009 offseason Dallas Cowboy need is to solidify a shaky secondary. Terrance Newman played injured most of last year, and he needs to be healthy for Dallas to make a playoff run. Pacman Jones and safety Roy Williams have been released and Anthony Henry was traded to the Detroit Lions. Dallas managed to finish 9th in passing defense in 2008. But a lot of that was due to teams running the ball at will and Dallas wouldn’t take Will out of the game!

I also expect Dallas to try to improve the offensive line in the draft or the later stage of free agency. If Tony Romo hadn’t missed 3 games, the “Boys” may have made the playoffs. Getting 2008 rookie running back Felix Jones back healthy will also improve their offense a great deal. Jones added some much needed explosion to America’s team in 2008 before he was injured.

The Cowboys will probably also add a veteran wide receiver if the price is right, or address the position in the 2009 NFL draft. Roy Williams will have to step it up to fill Terrell Owens’s shoes. Patrick Crayton is a capable number two wideout and I like Miles Austin if he can remain healthy, but they still need at least one more at the position. And Austin is a free agent at this point anyway.

Dallas Cowboys player moves during the 2009 offseason

Terrell Owens being released was by far the biggest move followed by Roy Williams which happened on the same day.

Joe Berger an offensive guard left the Cowboys as a free agent and signed with the Miami Dolphins.

Keith Brooking a long time Atlanta Falcon linebacker has been signed by America’s Team to shore up the run defense and be a leader in the locker room. Former Arizona Cardinal Linebacker Matt Stewart was signed for the same reasons.

Defensive end Chris Canty has signed a contract with NFC East division rival New York Giants. Defensive end Igor Olshansky was signed from the San Diego Chargers to replace Canty.

Trading Anthony Henry for John Kitna at least gives Tony Romo a capable backup quarterback. Kitna has been around the block but can be productive in spots. Brad Johnson the 2008 backup quarterback has been released.
