Denver hires a new coach
January 12th 2009 03:44
The Denver Broncos have hired former New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to be their next head coach. Long time Denver coach Mike Shanahan was recently fired by owner Pat Bolin. McDaniels had been an assistant coach with the Patriots since 2001 in one capacity or another.
Josh McDaniel’s became a hot commodity this season as there have been several head coaches fired and more possibly to be fired soon. Tom Brady played well in McDaniels system and Matt Cassel flourished despite not starting a game since high school, when Brady was knocked out for the season.
I think he will improve an already good Denver offense and help quarterback Jay Cutler improve. Cutler has all the tools but he has shown some maturity issues in the past and isn’t loved by all his teammates. But what really impresses me about McDaniels is his pedigree in New England. He has coached on the defensive side of the ball and as a Belicheck disciple he will appreciate building a good defense.
I just hope he does not follow in the footsteps of Charlie Weis at Notre Dame and Romeo Crennel with the Cleveland Browns. Both were former New England Patriot coordinators who were busts as head coaches. Crennel has been fired by the Browns at the end of this season and Weiss will be gone from Notre Dame sooner or later.
But I think the problem with Crennel was a lack of a good General Manager to provide quality players for the Browns. Weiss I do think is a bust but he was a decent coordinator in the past.
McDaniels was at the top of several teams coaching candidate list and now that he has a job, I expect several more hiring’s in the next few days. Combined with the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants losing this weekend. Teams will now be able to do more detailed interviews with their assistant coaches. And coach McDaniels himself is looking to raid the Philadelphia Eagles for defensive backs coach Sean McDermott. He would be the new defensive coordinator according to profootballtalk.com.
I don’t think teams will be looking to interview any assistants from the Carolina Panthers for important coaching jobs. But now that more assistants are free to talk then head coaching and coordinator positions will start to be filled.
I look forward to Josh McDaniels as the new coach of the Denver Broncos. Despite being a Chiefs fan, I really like Jay Cutler and expect him to flourish now.
