Browns thoughts after the Titans game

September 1st 2009 18:21
When it comes to the Browns, there are a few things that can be said. Preseason records do not really indicate how a team is really going to do during a season so that won't be the primary focus. What is going to be is the focus will be based around the offense and defense in a way. It was a bit shocking that Cleveland did pull off the win against a team that's expected to be pretty good this season.

1) It seems right now Brady Quinn is going to be the starting Quarterback going into the season. The guess on that may have something to do with the fact he got a touchdown pass in there. Sure, he had his receivers catch the ball, but it was a combined team effort. He has done a pretty good job on accuracy. If he gives the Browns chance, then by all means do it. He's gotta have good receivers catching the ball and having good protection.

2) Derek Anderson hasn't been horrible but really is going to serve his purpose as the #2 guy. Why anyone would trade him right away is beyond me. He can be useful in a back-up position. Believe it or not, he isn't the second coming of Ryan Leaf. If Quinn goes down or is really doing a horrible job getting the job, at least you know what you're going to be getting.

3) The running game right now is a question mark. If you're facing a weak defense, it may not be a problem but the stronger the defense against the Browns, it may not be nearly as effective. James Davis right now is unproven but does have serious potential though. Jamal Lewis I think may be done. Harrison could play a role once he is healthy.

4) Wide Receiver could be interesting. We don't know about Robiskie or Massaquoi so those guys I assume will get a chance to play. Braylon Edwards has to prove in the regular season that his Pro Bowl season wasn't a fluke. If he catches the ball more and gets some touchdowns, it will really help quite a lot. Josh Cribbs could be good to play Wide Receiver.

5) Defense needs some more work in terms of getting some sacks. Sure, they're keeping the points down in terms of not allowing too many, but still can get even stronger. Perhaps once Shaun Rogers returns, it can really help this team a lot.

In short, it's going to hopefully be a better season. You look at the team and don't expect much. If they do well, that would be nice. It's going to take at least another season before this team can be looked at as a playoff team. Potentially, they could be better than last year but only time will tell.
