Cam Newton and Tim Tebow bring the spread to the NFL
November 20th 2011 20:05
Cam Newton and Tim Tebow may be opening the NFL up to a new kind of quarterback. Newton first then Tebow have been playing well using aspects of the spread offense that is so successful in college football but before now was ignored in the NFL.
I wrote this article about the Spread Offense some time ago and said why I thought it would not work in the NFL. Simply the fact is that spread offense quarterbacks will get injured in the NFL. Teams using this offense would have to have two or three athletic quarterbacks who can run the offense.
The Carolina Panthers were the first NFL team to use aspects of the spread offense this year with Cam Newton. However the base Panthers offense is not the spread but they run some of it. Denver went to a full option or spread attack when Tim Tebow took over, and they started winning.
Tim Tebow and Cam Newton’s success will open the door for more athletic quarterbacks to get a shot. The NFL is very much a copycat league, so other teams with running quarterbacks will at least put in a package of spread offense plays in the future.
Now there is no real comparison between Cam Newton and Tim Tebow. Newton will gradually become more of a pro set NFL quarterback because he has the skill set to do that. Tebow will always be a spread type quarterback because he can’t throw the ball fast or accurately enough to be a NFL quarterback.
