Can the Jets do it?

No matter what you think of Brett Favre, tonight's game between the New York Jets and New England Patriots is one of the biggest games the Jets will have this year and more than just a little important to the Pats as well.
Everyone knows the story of the New England Patriots, who many consider to be the best team in professional football, and how they managed a perfect season last year before falling to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl.
What can you say about the Jets? Let's see--there was Joe Namath, the Bill Parcells era, and what else? It would be a bit of a stretch to say they've been as bad as the Pats have been good but, let's face it, they have experienced their share of down years over the past, what is it now, three decades????
After a dismal 4-12 season, the Jets have risen to challenge New England with an identical 6-3 record. To make it even more interesting, the Jets are also tied with the Pats for both the conference and division record. A slight nod has to go to the Jets if you want to talk about numbers because they are riding a three game win streak going into tonight's game.
It's fairly obvious that Favre has brought a toughness and can do attitude to the quarterback spot but there are other factors to consider. Running back tandem Tony Richardson and Thomas Jones, are part of the reason if you like running backs. If you're a lineman, Alan Faneca brings experience to the offensive line. If you're defensively minded, Kris Jenkins has helped solidify the line and linebacker Calvin Pace may not be setting the world on fire but has made contributions that have lead to the Jet's defensive surge. And, let's not forget Ty Law. He may be a little rusty but, look for an interception tonight from this defensive back simply because he wants to make a statement to his old team mates.
Even though they can lose this game and still make the playoffs, this may be do or die time for the Jets when it comes to the AFC East. Winning will propel them to the top of the division and probably launch them into the playoffs. Even a strong showing in a loss may mean contention for a wild card birth.
The call? I've been a Jets fan since back in the days of Joe Willie and Super Bowl III and I think it's time for a changing of the guard. Further, since Tom Brady is out for NE and Favre has been in big games before, I'm going with New York in a squeaker 21-20.
