Carolina Panthers 2010 NFL draft breakdown
April 25th 2010 15:35
The Carolina Panthers had to skip the first round of the draft due to trading that pick for the rights to draft Everett Brown last year. According to profootballreference.com Everett Brown played in 15 games in 2009, starting one. Brown had 2.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 2 passes defensed and 15 tackles with 7 assists. Not quite a bust, but Brown didn’t show much either.
With their first pick in the 2010 NFL draft the Carolina Panthers picked Jimmy Clausen the quarterback out of Notre Dame. The Panthers got decent draft value out of Jimmy Clausen because he is thought to have top ten talent in this draft. However attitude concerns led to his falling to the 2nd round. I don’t agree with this pick as the Panther could have added a veteran like Mark Bulger to back up Matt Moore. Now the Panthers have a quarterback unit with 8 combined NFL starts, all by Moore.
With the next pick the Carolina Panthers selected Brandon LaFell the wide receiver out of Louisiana Tech. LaFell has decent speed and great size but he couldn’t catch a cold in a freezer. You don’t get to drop too many passes in the NFL.
The Panthers then traded the 2011 second round pick to get a third round pick in 2010 and drafted Armani Edwards the quarterback out of Appalachian State. Edwards is a home town boy who will add a few fans if he does well. At 5ft 11 Armani Edwards is probably too short to play quarterback in the NFL and will play slot receiver. Edwards did play wide receiver in high school. Armani Edwards was the quarterback when Appalachian State upset Michigan a couple of years ago. I like the pick of Edwards but wonder if he didn’t go a little high.
Eric Norwood the linebacker out of South Carolina was the next Carolina Panther pick in the 2010 NFL draft. Norwood is a solid linebacker with some pass rushing skills, except the Panthers don’t blitz much. He should be solid on special teams at least.
Defensive end Greg Hardy is my favorite Carolina Panther draft choice in the draft. Hardy is a 6ft 4 beast who can really get to the passer when he is motivated. Getting him to want to play hard is the problem, kind of sounds like Julius Peppers. For a sixth round draft choice, I like this pick.
Round six also brought another tall wide receiver in David Gettis the 6ft 3 wideout who attended Baylor.
Cornerback Jordan Pugh from Texas A&M will probably make the team for special teams play if nothing else.
Tony Pike the 6ft 6 quarterback from Cincinnati is tall but brittle. His cannon arm will earn him a shot on the practice squad unless he is just terrible in the Carolina Panthers training camp.
Round seven of the 2010 NFL draft brought two more defensive backs to the Carolina Panthers. R.J. Sanford from Utah and Robert McClain who attended Connecticut. I don’t see both of them making the team and the best special teams player will stick if either do.
I give the Carolina Panthers a C for their 2010 NFL draft. If Clausen is a franchise quarterback then this goes to an A of course.
