Carolina Panthers alienating their fans
April 16th 2010 23:00
The Carolina Panthers are alienating their fans like never before. At first the Panthers fans rejoiced when the hated Jake Delhomme was released despite being owned lots of money. Then it became clear that the Carolina Panthers are standing pat and not trying to improve the team in 2010.
Jake Delhomme was cut so the Panthers could clear the payroll of him. With no salary cap this season the team cleaned house. Several veteran players were released or not resigned so the team can go on a “Youth Movement.”
Jake Delhomme got a tearful press conference on his way out the door, Brad Hoover just got the shaft. The Panthers are alienating their fans because they have made no major moves via free agency to fill the holes on the roster. Panther’s star receiver Steve Smith went on WFNZ’s “The Mac Attack” and told Chris McClain that he needed help at wide receiver. Click this link to read me interviewing McClain from last year.
The Carolina Panthers are alienating their fans by raising ticket prices as well as not trying to improve on the field. Meanwhile a playoff NBA team, the Charlotte Bobcats have lowered ticket prices since Michael Jordan bought the team.
The fact is that the NFL is so popular that the Panthers can afford to piss off their fans. And the fact that there may not be football in 2011 shows in how Jerry Richardson is running the team.
When football returns to normal after the collective bargaining agreement is signed, the Panthers will be in good shape. Whether there is a salary cap or not the team will be young and ready for a new coach or even new owner as some have speculated.
For more great sports coverage of the Panthers and much more check out the blog of Brett Jensen by clicking this link. Maybe the Panthers will read it and see how mad they are making their fans in Charlotte.
