Bengals FA moves and needs for 2009

March 30th 2009 14:05
This article will describe the Cincinnati Bengals 2009 offseason needs and free agent signings. I am writing this on March28th so any player moves after this date, of course won’t be in the article. All stats and schedule information comes from NFL.com. I will tell what the Cincinnati Bengals need to do to improve in the 2009 NFL season, as well as discuss their free agents.

2009 Cincinnati Bengals offseason needs

I was impressed with how the Bengals finished 2008 by winning their last 3 games and with a backup quarterback at that. Cincinnati lost several close games to good teams like the Ravens, Eagles and Giants. Teams like that can turn around their fortunes in one season. If the Bengals can stay healthy in 2009 and make a few key player moves they could well be a playoff team.

The first 2009 offseason need for the Bengals is to make sure quarterback Carson Palmer is healthy and well protected. Replacing T.J. Houshmandzadeh with Laveranues Coles does not create a terrible drop off at the wide receiver position.

Replacing former franchise tagged offensive lineman Stacy Andrews may be a problem however. I think the team needs to resign some of their free agents like John Thornton who had a good season at his defensive tackle spot. Flooding the team with young players without a veteran presence on the team isn’t a good thing.

I think with a healthy Carson Palmer and Chad Johnson combined with Coles and Cedric Benson the skills positions on offense are in pretty good shape. The Bengals need offensive line help and defensive backs more than anything in my opinion.

2009 Cincinnati Bengals free agent moves

Again keep in mind this article about the Bengals 2009 offseason needs and free agent moves is being written on March 19.

Losing T.J. Houshmandzadeh will hurt them some but it also may make Chad Johnson even better. Laveranues Coles will settle into the number 2 wideout spot with no problem and can compliment Johnson. As mentioned above replacing Stacy Andrews who was coming off an injury will be key. They need a long term guy at that spot, to protect Palmer and block for Benson. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick who played decently at time in Palmer’s absence has signed with the Buffalo Bills.

The Bengals resigned the following 2009 free agents from their own team. RB Cedric Benson, LB Darryl Blackstock, FS Chris Crocker, RB DeDe Dorsey, DB Jamar Fletcher, and Orien Harris.

The Bengals signed the following 2009 free agents from other teams. QB J.T. O’Sullivan from the 49ers, and wide receiver Laveranues Coles from the Jets. Thanks for reading
