Potential new NFL coaches in 2010

December 19th 2009 22:52
I will tell you some potential new head coaches for the 2010 NFL season. It seems like every year there are at least 3 job openings for the head coaching position on a NFL team. Of course some years there are more and some have less. I wrote this article about NFL coaches on the hot seat in 2009. One of the coaches I mentioned to be coaching for his job has already been fired, Dick Jauron of Buffalo.

With the Bills, Redskins, and Panthers probably and the Cowboys, Browns, Bears, Texans, Jaguars and Raiders possibly looking for new coaches, there are spots to fill. So I will list who I think the top candidates are to be new NFL coaches in 2010.

Mike Shanahan
Mike Shanahan the long time Denver Bronco head coach is so hot right now that teams are rumored to already being in talks with him. The Redskins, Cowboys and Texans are thought to be interesting in hiring Mike Shanahan. When Shanahan was fired in Denver I wrote this article on why he deserved a new chance at being a head coach. I think he will end up in Washington.

Bill Cowher

I think if Cowher ever returns to NFL coaching it will be in 2010 and with the Carolina Panthers. Owner Jerry Richardson has long tried to model the Panthers after the Steelers and recently fired his own sons from the team. I think this gives Cowher room to bring in his own people to help him run the Panthers. Cowher has a home in North Carolina and I think the Panthers are the best fit for him. Not in the least because there is a talented roster already in place.

Mike Holmgren

Mike Holmgren retired from the Seahawks but is rumored to want back in the game. But I think Holmgren wants to be a front office guy and not a head NFL coach.

Greg Williams

If the Saints stay undefeated or win the Super Bowl or both then Williams may get another head coaching shot. The improved Saints defense has helped the team and Williams may get a head coaching job in 2010. Pete Carmichael Jr. the offensive coordinator of the Saints may also get a few head coaching interviews.

Clarence Shelmon

Clarence Shelmon is the offensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers and has extensive experience in coaching running backs. The Chargers offense is quietly having a great season and Shelmon is a big part of that.

Dom Capers

Capers is a long shot for another head coaching gig but his work with Green Bay’s defense may get him a look. Capers has coached two NFL expansion teams and had some good years with the Carolina Panthers.

Mike Zimmer

Zimmer got some exposure on HBO’s hard knocks as a hard ass defensive coach whose wife made him soften up. Sadly his wife passed away unexpectedly during the 2009 NFL season. Zimmer has done a good job with a surprising Bengals team and if the Bengals go far in the playoffs, could be a potential new NFL coach in 2010.

With a possible NFL players strike looming and no salary cap in 2010, it may make some team owners hesitate to hire a new head coach. But if they do the ones on this list are a great group to look at first.

This is a list of TOP candidates but I always wonder if Iron Mike will return to the NFL. As far as that goes I was just wondering about the "Tuna" this week. On the list, Don Capers is my pick!

I almost included Ditka and would love to see him coach again.
