College Football Picks: Week 1
September 3rd 2009 22:32
Greetings loyal Footballdogz readers. The new college football season is upon us and likewise, I, Robin Pottratz have made my triumphant return to footballdogz.com in order to provide insight, predictions...and just plain guesses on this year's race to the BCS Championship.
Week one is easily the most unpredictable, which means that every pick is a roll of the dice. While I wouldn't bet my house on these picks...there is no denying that the results will be a lot of fun.
Now, on the predictions.
#16 Oregon at #14 Boise State:
Ah, the blue field of perennial BCS buster Boise State. The broncos are clearly the class of the WAC and have a relatively easy path to an undefeated season and BCS birth...after this game. With USC in rebuilding mode (or as close to rebuilding mode as the Trojans can be), Oregon is a popular pick to win the Pac-10. If this game was in Eugene, I would give the Ducks an edge...but sadly this one is in Boise, which means a Bronco stampede.
Oregon 24 Boise State 38
Northern Iowa at #22 Iowa:
What makes this game intriguing is that Iowa will not have their number one running back Jewel Hampton for the entire season following a knee injury. This will have a large impact on their season...but not this week.
UNI 6 Iowa 24
#13 Georgia at #9 Oklahoma State:
One of the three marquee games of the weekend. Oklahoma State will spend the entire season jockeying for position against Oklahoma and Texas in the crowded Big 12...so they can nay afford any slip ups. Georgia is reloaded, but going to Stillwater will display a few growing pains for the Bulldogs...given that they have to replace both QB Matthew Stafford and RB Knoshon Moreno. Oklahoma returns with their all-everything thing receiver Dez Bryant. This is a statement game, and they make it.
Georgia 24 Oklahoma State 30
San Jose State at #4 USC:
The San Jose State Spartans pose a serious threat to...um...they can challenge USC at...um...Well USC could...um.
I got nothing.
SJSU 3 USC 45
Charleston Southern at #1 Florida:
Florida has almost everyone back...with the exception of Percy Harvin...and most College Football experts are posing the question of who will win the National Title...Florida or the Field? What makes this game so intriguing is that Florida is a 70 point favorite...yes you read that right.
I don't think the gators will hit that...but it will be close.
CSU 10 Florida 63
#20 BYU at #3 Oklahoma:
BYU would be a potential BCS buster if they didn't have to play Oklahoma in the opening game of the season. The fact that it is on a neutral field will help...but not much. Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford is back...but his O-line is not. This will be closer than the experts think, but the Sooners still get a win.
BYU 14 Oklahoma 24
#5 Alabama vs #7 Virginia Tech:
The Hokies are a wounded animal...having lost RB Darren Evans to a torn ACL, but it is time for VT QB Tyrod Taylor to shine after having to split time with Sean Glennon the past few years. Alabama has lost some pieces as well, losing OT Andre Smith, RB Glen Coffee, and QB on John Parker Wilson. Nick Saban will reload and this is a great test in what is the game of the weekend.
I say that the Hokies get it done.
'Bama 17 Va Tech 20
Upset Specials: Week One...2 for 1
Miami FL at #18 Florida State:
I know nothing about these two teams. All I know is that regardless of talent and skill level, players will get up in a big rivalry game...and in the great state of Florida, few can match the intensity of the Hurricanes and Seminoles. My gut tells me that this will be the biggest upset of the week.
Miami 23 FSU 20
Nevada at #23 Notre Dame:
Irish coach Charlie Weis' chair is on fire. If he doesn't deliver this season, he will be on the unemployment line come January. He has assembled a mostly cream-puff schedule...but Mu gut is also telling me that this game signals the beginning of the end for Coach Weis and the Irish's BCS hopes.
Nevada 24 ND 17
