College Football Picks: Week 2
September 11th 2009 04:24
Well, week one of the college football season is in the books with a weekend full of surprises and devastating consequences. The biggest surprise and devastation came in the upset victory of BYU over Oklahoma where the national title hopeful Sooners lost their Heisman winning QB Sam Bradford for the next month or so. The other surprise came in the upset victory of the Miami Hurricanes beating the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee (well this was no surprise to me seeing as I predicted this upset...luck sheer luck).
With a little more education I should be able to make more accurate picks, so here are my predictions:
#9 BYU at Tulane:
The primary purpose of this game is to see what BYU can do against an opponent that is on paper...inferior. I predict that BYU will have a bit of a hangover from their huge win against OU...but still get the job done.
BYU 28 Tulane 17
#18 Notre Dame at Michigan:
The Wolverines are a mess following the allegations of workout abuse against Coach Rich Rodriguez...and the Irish have a coach in Charlie Weis with the hottest seat in college football. The other big story is that for the first time in years...both of these teams are unbeaten headed into this game. That makes this game somewhat intriguing. I predict that in front of the big house crowd in Ann Arbor that the Wolverines get it done.
ND 13 Mich 16
#16 TCU at Virginia:
The Mountain West is considered a three horse race with TCU competing against Utah and BYU for a BCS birth. TCU has an advantage this week because they are still very much an enigma having not played last week. Virginia has its issues and will be exploited by a tough TCU squad.
TCU 31 Virginia 10
South Carolina at #21 Georgia:
Oh how the Bulldogs have fallen. The Matthew Stafford heyday must seem like decades ago. After their defeat at the hands of Oklahoma State, Georgia must now enter the SEC season and it doesn't start easily with a game against Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks. South Carolina is coming off of a win against NC State and is feeling some momentum. Georgia gets the job done...but it will be a rough road.
SCU 20 Georgia 26
#3 USC at #8 Ohio State:
This is the game of the weekend, Ohio State is coming off of an unimpressive debut, narrowly defeating Navy. The Buckeyes have simply lost the stigma of previous years...but are still a formidable club. It is really hard to gauge how good USC is...I mean San Jose State aren't exactly the Florida Gators. This will be a true test for the young Trojans by going into Columbus to try to get a win. The Buckeyes have not forgotten the 35-3 thrashing that occurred last year and I predict that they avenge last years embarrassment.
OSU 28 USC 25
Upset Pick of the Week:
#19 North Carolina at Connecticut:
Its amazing how far the Huskies have come in a few years. Don't get me wrong, UNC has an impressive offense, but my gut is telling me that the Huskies can pull off the huge upset.
UNC 31 UConn 34
Special Attraction Game:
Air Force at Minnesota:
It is the debut of the Gophers' new TCF Bank Stadium. I walk by this beautiful facility every day and I can assure you that it will be jam packed on Saturday night for the home opener. The problem is that the Gophers are playing Air Force, which is coming off of a 72-0 opening victory and possess one of the most potent option attacks in the country. The combination will prove to be too much for the Gophers as they lose their home opener.
Air Force 35 Minnesota 28
