College Football Picks: Week 3
September 18th 2009 13:33
Two weeks are in the books and the BCS field is beginning to emerge. Surprises (BYU, Miami) have sprung and disappointments (Oklahoma, Notre Dame) have stung. With this week, we begin to enter the meat of the conference schedule, where the most compelling football will take place.
Now, on to the picks
#10 Boise State at Fresno State:
The Bulldogs are coming off of a disappointing outing at Wisconsin where they blew a double digit lead, only to lose in overtime. Things don't get any easier when the Broncos come to town. This one will be close, but Boise State will continue its quest for an unbeaten season unscathed.
Boise State 24 Fresno State 20
#8 California at Minnesota:
TCF Bank Stadium is one gorgeous facility and the Gophers opened with an exciting win over Air Force. This will not be the case this week as Heisman Candidate Jahvid Best pads his resume and Cal continues its quest to overtake USC for a Pac-10 title.
California 31 Minnesota 10
Tennessee at #1 Florida:
This game on paper is a blowout...however what makes this still intriguing is fuel added to the fire by Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin as he has accused Florida of cheating on recruiting and claims they will be playing "Rocky Top" in Knoxville after they beat Florida...That will not be the case as the Gators are out for blood.
Tennessee 10 Florida 38
Michigan State at Notre Dame:
Charlie Weis, your seat is aflame!!! After that crushing loss to Michigan last week, the former New England offensive coordinator may be on borrowed time as coach of the Irish. They bounce back this week against the Spartans, but there is much work to be done in order for Weis to save his job.
Michigan State 21 Notre Dame 28
#19 Nebraska at #13 Virginia Tech:
Nebraska is steady in its course to bring its program back to prominence...while the Hokies have an uphill battle after that loss a couple of weeks ago to Alabama. The key stat here is that Nebraska hasn't won against a top 20 team on the road since Tom Osborne was the coach...that is a long time people...that continues this week
Nebraska 16 Virginia Tech 28
#3 USC at Washington:
The big story is that the hero of last week, USC QB Matt Barkley will not be playing due to a shoulder injury. This won't matter this week because the Trojans still have Joe Mcknight...he can cover a lot of sins.
USC 31 Washington 15
#18 Utah at Oregon:
An intriguing match up indeed, Oregon is trying to heal from the black eye at Boise State and Utah has an uphill battle trying to catch up with TCU and BYU for a BCS birth. I predict that in a hard fought game, Utah gets the job done.
Utah 24 Oregon 21
Florida State at #7 BYU:
Max Hall is becoming a valid Heisman candidate for the Cougars of BYU and people are beginning to take a hard look at BYU as they may be above the stigma of a mid major team. A big win over FSU would help their case...they get it.
FSU 7 BYU 31
Texas Tech at #2 Texas:
This is considered the game of the week, mostly because of the memories of last year's classic. Unfortunately for the Red Raiders, Graham Harrel is no longer throwing passes and Michael Crabtree is no longer catching those passes...and unfortunately Colt McCoy is still the Texas QB.
Texas Tech 18 Texas 37
Upset Special!!! Two for One!!!
#23 Georgia at Arkansas:
Georgia's much heralded defense has come apart at the seams in their first two games...allowing an average of 30.5 points a game. Arkansas has developed a solid and consistent program over the past few years. Consistency being the operative word...a word that the Bulldogs no longer know.
Georgia 21 Arkansas 30
#17 Cincinnatti at Oregon State:
QB Tony Pike has been phenomenal for the Bearcats, leading them to a 70-3 win over SE Missouri State last Saturday. Oregon State is not SE MIssouri State, I think that the Bearcats have a hangover and slip up to OSU.
Cincy 21 Oregon State 27
