Colts 2009 moves and needs
March 31st 2009 14:12
This article is about the 2009 offseason needs and free agent moves of the Indianapolis Colts. I am doing these 2009 NFL team profiles on all teams so please check my profile if you want to read more of them. Any stats in this 2009 Indianapolis Colts offseason needs article come from NFL.com. I get over 1,000 hits a week on these articles but few comments. If you are a non AC writer and find this please comment, whether you like it or not.
Colts 2009 offseason needs
The biggest need for the 2009 Colts is to adjust to their new coach, Jim Caldwell. Former head coach Tony Dungy stepped down shortly after the regular season and Caldwell took over. About the first thing Caldwell did was fire the defensive coordinator Ron Meeks (now in with the Carolina Panthers) and hire Larry Cover to be the new DC. I assume that the Colts will continue to use the cover 2 defense since Larry Cover used to coach it on the Tampa staff.
The next biggest need in 2009 for the Colts is to get used to Marvin Harrison being gone. Harrison was released and now the team needs a number 3 wide receiver behind Anthony Gonzalez and Reggie Wayne.
The Colts also need to improve their offensive line particularly in run blocking to be better in the 2009 NFL season. It wouldn’t hurt to add a competent backup running back for Joseph Addai either. Having a stronger running game will help take pressure off of Peyton Manning and the passing offense.
Adding some defensive line and linebacker help wouldn’t hurt the team either. Look for Indy to draft one or two linebackers who could help out on special teams while they learn their craft. Keeping safety Bob Sanders healthy would be a boon to the defense. However he hits so hard that he gets injured every season and misses games.
Colts 2009 free agent moves
I am writing this article on March 24th 2009, any Colts free agent moves after this date won’t be in this article. However I will update any major moves in the comments or edit this article itself to show them. The Colts have not been major players in 2009 NFL free agency to this point.
Marvin Harrison being released was their major free agent move. Peyton Manning will have to live without his best receiver now.
Defensive tackle Darrell Reed left the Colts and signed with the Denver Broncos.
Center Jeff Saturday resigned with the Colts which they needed him to do badly.Other than that there have been no moves. For a list of Colts free agents who have not signed with any team go to this NFL.com page.
