Players who need a good combine
February 27th 2010 02:12
The NFL Scouting Combine is a big job interview for college players trying to make it in pro football. Draft stock is very important as it determines where a player will be picked in the order of the NFL draft and this how much money he makes. I will now list 4 players who need a good NFL Combine to maintain their draft stock or improve it. The following players were highly thought of at some point but may have slipped under the NFL scouting radar so to speak.
Many top prospects skip the NFL Combine to do their own workouts for scouts. Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen, Dan Lefevour, Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow are not throwing at the 2010 NFL Combine. This is a virtual who’s who of my 2010 quarterback rankings for the NFL draft. Tim Tebow may not even play quarterback in the NFL.
1 LeGarrette Blount RB- Oregon
LeGarrette Blount needs a great Combine to rise his draft stock. He knocked out an opponent who was taunting him and was suspended for a 2nd time in his career. Blount is an arrest waiting to happen but a strong combine could raise his stock. I currently have Blount ranked 9th on my 2010 NFL draft running back ratings. The issues with Blount’s temper and the fact that NFL running backs are a dime a dozen really hurt his draft stock.
2 Brandon LaFell WR- LSU
Brandon LaFell is going through something we see every year near draft time. A productive players starts to drop in status due to perceived lack of speed. LaFell didn’t play in the college all star game and the combine will be his chance to shine. If LaFell runs a good 40 yard dash his stock will certainly rise.
3 Taylor Mays Safety- USC
Taylor Mays was hyped up quite a bit then seems to have fallen from grace. He comes from a big time program at USC and had a productive college career but needs a good combine to bring his stock up a bit. Defensive coaches covet safeties these days and if Taylor Mays shows he has good speed and strength then a coach will take a chance on him early.
4 Ndamukong Suh DT- Nebraska
I know Suh is considered by many to be the best player in the 2010 NFL draft and I even have him as the number one pick in my mock draft. But worries about his first step speed are out there and some say Gerald McCoy from Oklahoma is the best defensive tackle in the draft. If Suh shows some athleticism in the combine his draft stock will be cemented and won’t drop.
