Why do players skip the NFL Combine?

Top college football players often skip the NFL Combine, for various reasons. The NFL Scouting Combine is where college players get invited to come to Indianapolis to show off their skills to potential employers, NFL teams. They go through various drills and do bench pressing and run the 40 yard dash.
The reasons why some players skip the NFL Combine are simple. Some are injured and can’t do the drills. Some like quarterback Dan Lefevour of Central Michigan and Tim Tebow of Florida know they are not good enough to impress scouts. The quarterbacks who skipped all or part of the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine read like a who’s who of my top rankings of QB’s for the 2010 draft.
Tebow who may not even play quarterback in the NFL is changing his throwing motion and it’s understandable why he won’t throw at the combine. Dan Lefevour however had a chance to impress scouts and move up in the draft, but will only throw to stationary targets and not moving ones. This shows Lefevour knows his skills are not up to the task and he hopes he will be drafted on his potential.
Skills’ not being up to par is undoubtedly the most common reason players skip the NFL Combine and work out at their pro day. A Pro Day is where a college football player has a workout similar to the combine but at his school with his coaches and teammates there.
It IS to a player’s advantage to do his workouts on familiar ground. A Pro Day workout is especially good for quarterbacks as they will be throwing to their college receivers and will have a good connection with them.
The NFL Combine can be a chore for college quarterbacks who have the disadvantage of having played in the spread offense. They know that now they are playing for the big boys and have to show different skills to NFL scouts and coaches in order to get drafted high. Another reason so many quarterbacks skip the NFL Scouting Combine.
Tim Tebow will have a rough time with the transition to the NFL. Some people of lesser football smarts compare Tebow to Michael Vick and Vince Young. Well that is stupid as they run like the wind and Tebow runs like an army tank. Plus Vick had and has a better arm than Tebow and Young does as well. Tebow was wise to skip the NFL Combine to work on his skills while waiting on his Pro Day.
