Greatest Dallas Cowboy draft picks ever

May 5th 2009 11:10
This article is about the best Dallas Cowboys draft picks ever. Since entering the NFL draft in 1961 the Cowboys have had their share of draft busts but they also have drafted very well at times. All drafting information comes from NFL.com. Read on to find the best Dallas Cowboys draft picks ever. I will list the best Dallas Cowboys draft picks by year from 1961 till present day. If I skip a year it is because that draft didn’t produce a true superstar from their draft position.

1961 produced “Mr. Cowboy” Bob Lilly a NFL hall of fame defensive tackle and a mainstay in Dallas for 14 seasons. And if a defensive tackle can be the face of a franchise Bob Lilly was for so many years. Bob Lilly was drafted in the first round of the 1961 draft.

1963 produced Lee Roy Jordan who was a monster presence for the Dallas Cowboys at linebacker for many seasons. Lee Roy Jordan was a first round draft pick out of Alabama by the Dallas Cowboys.

1964 was a stellar draft for the Dallas Cowboys. Mel Renfro one of the best cornerbacks in NFL history was a 2nd round pick for Dallas in 1964. “Bullet” Bob Hayes was selected as a steal in the 7th round. Some guy named Roger Staubach was a 10th round pick. Staubach was selected so late due to a commitment to be in the United States Navy. But he turned out to be worth the wait!

1967 saw NFL hall of fame offensive tackle Rayfield Wright drafted in the 7th round as the 182nd player selected overall. All he did was play 13 seasons and become an important member of some championship teams.

1974 saw the addition of Ed “Too Tall” Jones as the number one overall draft pick. Jones was a beast for many years. Punter/Quarterback Danny White the most underrated quarterback in Dallas history was added in the 3rd round.

1975 was probably the best NFL draft in Dallas Cowboys history. Randy White an all world “Manster” of a defensive tackle was first. Thomas “Hollywood” Henderson who would have been the best linebacker ever except for a drug problem. Bob Breunig was an outstanding linebacker for years. Offensive tackle Pat Donovan, safety Randy Hughes, linebacker Mike Hegman, and running back Scott Laidlaw were other notable picks in 1975. The men from the 1975 draft were known as the Dallas Cowboys “Dirty Dozen” rookies.

1977 saw the two Tony’s. Tony “Thrill” Hill a great wide receiver and NFL hall of famer Tony Dorsett were selected in this draft. A quarterback of note for other teams later, Steve Deberg was also Cowboys pick in 1977.

1985 saw Hershel Walker drafted in the 5th round in hopes that the USFL would fold. It did and he had a nice career with the team. But more importantly he was traded in a monster deal with the Minnesota Vikings that allowed the Cowboys to return to Super Bowl glory.

1988 brought all world wide receiver and drug offender Michael Irvin to play wide receiver for America’s team. Ken Norton Jr. and Chad Hennings were also picked by Dallas in 1988.

1989 brought hall of famer Troy Aikman to be the quarterback of America’s team for many years and championship wins. Daryl “Moose” Johnston was added to be the fullback and center Mark Stepnoski were also picked in 1989.

1990 was pretty much a bust draft. Well there was that short slow running back from Florida. Emmitt Smith was his name and is one of the best running backs in NFL history.

1998 brought some linemen of note. Defensive ends Greg Ellis, defensive tackle Michael Myers. Offensive guard Flozzell Adams was also part of this draft.

2003 brought perhaps the best Dallas Cowboy tight end ever in Jason Whitten picked in the 3rd round. Great cornerback Terrance Newman and linebacker Brady James were also added to America’s team in the 2003 NFL draft.

great post.. I like your blog as you know, and there are few other sport blogs on this site that I really like reading, but we need more to cover American sports.

I agree, we mostly compete with soccer blogs in the football section here.
