Dallas Cowboys 2009 draft grade

This article will grade the Dallas Cowboys 2009 NFL draft. I will try to give fans of America's team an idea how they fared with their picks. All draft information for the Dallas Cowboys 2009 draft grade comes from NFL.com. Keep in mind it actually takes at least 3 years to really grade an NFL draft. But I will give a preliminary grade for the 2009 Dallas Cowboys draft grade here. If you want to learn about the team needs and free agent moves of the Dallas Cowboys then click here.
The Dallas Cowboys didn't have a first round pick in the 2009 NFL draft. Trading that pick for wide receiver Roy Williams hurt their draft grade for now. Then Dallas started doing some trades and ended up making their first selection in the 3rd round with the fifth pick.
Linebacker Jason Williams out of Western Illinois was the first pick by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2009 NFL draft. Jason Williams may not be the run stuffing linebacker that Dallas needed but he may be able to help on special teams and provide some pass rush.
Robert Brewster is an interesting pick to me. He is a college tackle who may play guard for the Cowboys. Games are won in the trenches and you can't have enough good linemen. I think this was a better pick than Williams for the Cowboys draft grade.
Stephen McGee being picked by Dallas shows they are looking to put a young guy in to learn from Kitna and Romo. It is also being said that America's team may be tired of Romo choking. Stephen McGee did his college quarterbacking at Texas A&M.
Picking undersized defensive end Victor Butler out of Oregon State is a nod to special teams play in 2009. He is too small at 6ft 2 and 248 pounds to play defensive end in the 3-4. It is possible they could try him at linebacker but he is more destined for the kick teams in my opinion.
Defensive end Brandon Williams is more of a size for the 3-4 at 6ft 5 and over 240 pounds. He left Texas Tech as an underclassman and this may have hurt him. Another year to add bulk and experience would have helped him
DeAngelo Smith out of Cincinnati fills a need by adding some defensive back help. Smith is a tad slow for corner but is a hard hitter. Look for him to move to safety as the Cowboys try to replace Roy Williams.
Michael Hamlin a safety from Clemson will also be in the mix at trying to fix a bad Dallas secondary.
David Buehler was a "What the hell let's do it" pick in round 5 and it had me scratching my head. Dallas already has a good kicker in Nick Folk.
Yet another safety in Stephen Hodge out of TCU shows how much the Cowboys are trying to improve their secondary and special teams. But I think he will be cannon fodder in training camp with little chance to make the team.
Jason Phillips is a 6ft 5 tight end out of Virginia who will try to win a roster spot as a 3rd tight end.
Mike Mickens a cornerback out of Cincinnati may be a surprise roster addition even though he was a late pick. I had him higher on my draft board than most people.
Wide receiver Manuel Johnson out of Oklahoma is small and quick. Even with Terrell Owens going to Buffalo I don't see Johnson making more than the taxi squad.
Overall I give the Cowboys C on their 2009 NFL draft, due to the sheer number of picks of nothing else. They at least seemed to have solidified their special teams though I doubt any will make the best Cowboys pick ever list.
