Michael Crabtree's injury may cost him some coin

February 21st 2009 21:26
Michael Crabtree who was expected to be the first wide receiver picked in the 2009 NFL draft may not be now. The Texas Tech wide receiver showed up to the NFL scouting combine with a stress fracture in his left foot. According to Profootballtalk.com Crabtree requires surgery on the foot and will miss 10 weeks.

The dilemma is that the scouting combine is used as well as individual pro days to test college players to see how they may rank for the NFL draft. Crabtree was expected to show his time in the 40 yard dash. He is not thought to be a burner and a fast 40 yard dash time would have secured top receiver status.

Michael Crabtree was widely expected to be the first wide receiver taken in the 2009 NFL draft, probably by the Seattle Seahawks. That is where I and many others have him being selected in our mock drafts. With Crabtree’s injury he may well slip several positions in the draft and lose a lot of potential money.

I still say the Seahawks take him at #4. Missing the 40 is no big deal. He's proved he is that explosive play-maker they are looking for at WR. If he does opt to have surgery - I'd still take him. He'd be healthy right at camp time and not miss anything teamwise. Plus I think he would have taken a bigger hit had he ran the 40 and had a slow time - who would want a slow AND injured WR? I'd go for the healthy explosive WR.

I just think that him having to have surgery will drop his value. A receiver's feet are his 2nd most important body parts.
