Cutler traded to the Bears
April 3rd 2009 02:00
The Denver Broncos traded Jay Cutler and a 5th round 2009 NFL draft choice to the Chicago Bears. The Bears gave up a first round draft pick in 2009 and 2010 plus a third round draft pick in 2009. Starting Chicago Bear quarterback Kyle Orton was also sent to the Broncos. In an unrelated move the Bears also signed free agent offensive tackle Orlando Pace, the former Ram.
Jay Cutler grew up a Bears fan and should be happy to be out of Denver. Now he has the luxury of a decent defense and running game, something he didn’t have with the Broncos. However there is no legitimate number one wide receiver on the Bears roster. Hester is improving but he is not a quality player on offense, at least not yet.
The Broncos now will possibly package their first round draft picks to move up in the 2009 NFL draft. They have the ammo for a trade to move up to select a quarterback. However if I was in charge of the team I would take two defensive players. Denver has two draft picks next year in the first round and can trade up then to take a quarterback. I believe Kyle Orton and Chris Sims should battle it out for the number one quarterback slot. Orton may just surprise some people when he gets to play on a team with good wide receivers for the first time in his career.
The mega trade of Cutler to the Bears was a bit shocking as Chicago isn’t known for making deals like that. But when you see a chance at a young franchise quarterback you have to go for it. I think the deal worked well for Denver and the Bears, depending on how the Broncos use those draft picks.
It was thought that Cutler would be traded to the Washington Redskins who were interested in dealing for him. Tampa Bay, Minnesota and the Detroit Lions were also thought to be trying to work a trade for Jay Cutler.
If Denver can draft a good replacement or develop Orton then this was a good trade for them. Cutler already is the best quarterback the Bears have had since the overrated Jim McMahon and could become the best since Sid Luckman.
Only time will tell how the trade will work to each team’s advantage, but right now I would say the Bears have a slight upper hand. Until we see what the Broncos do with those draft picks anyway.
