Fred Taylor, Chris McAlister cut, Jeff Gracia is next

Jeff Garcia, Fred Taylor and Chris McAlister are looking for new teams in 2009. According to Profootballtalk.com Garcia won’t be retained by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Chris McAlister and Fred Taylor have been released by the Ravens and Jaguars respectively. Fred Taylor was released despite offering to take a pay cut to stay with the team.
Fred Taylor was the franchise running back for the Jacksonville Jaguars for most of his 11 year career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The emergence of Maurice Jones Drew cut into his playing time the last two seasons though. Fred Taylor rushed for 11,271 yards and 80 touchdowns for the Jaguars. He may have hit the wall due to age and his price tag would be a little high. I am not sure he will catch on with another team because he is 33 years old. It is possible he could sign an incentive laden league minimum contract with some team.
Chris McAlister was a shut down corner for the Baltimore Ravens for several seasons. But he has 10 seasons under his belt and a high price tag as well. Due to a shortage of defensive backs around the league I do expect Chris McAlister to play somewhere in 2009.
Jeff Garcia ranks high on my list of 2009 free agent quarterbacks even though he is older than dirt. If Garcia will accept a backup role he will be on some roster in 2009. He could even return to the Eagles if they are not satisfied with Donovan McNabb’s backups this season. Garcia had great success as a backup for the Eagles before he went to Tampa Bay.
Don’t be surprised to see other big name players get cut in the new few days as teams try to clear room on their salary caps. We see this every season; some will take the pay cuts to keep playing. Some will retire and some won’t even be wanted by a different NFL team.
