Ernie Davis

Ernie Davis is about the become famous to an all new generation of fans. The movie called “The Express” tells the story Ernie Davis. And what a story it is, as his life must have indeed felt like an express at times, before its tragic ending.
Ernie Davis was the first African American to win the coveted Heisman Trophy in college football. The “Elmira Express” as he was dubbed battled racism as well as opposing college football teams.
After winning the Heisman Trophy at Syracuse he was drafted in 1962 by the Washington Redskins. The Cleveland Browns later traded for Davis and wanted to pair him with Jim Brown. Syracuse had also produced Jim Brown, arguably (not by me) the best running back in NFL history.
Davis and Brown running amuck in the NFL was never to be however. Davis learned he had leukemia and died at the age of 23 without ever taking an NFL snap. The Cleveland Browns retired his number in a huge show of class.
I can’t wait until the movie “The Express” comes out. I loved “Brian’s Song” and I feel this movie may be even better.
