Several reputable (plus this one) sites reported earlier that David Cutcliffe would be taking the Tennessee job. Well we were wrong, former Louisiana Tech coach Derek Dooley is the new head coach at Tennessee.
Derek Dooly is the son of Vince and brings a 17-20 record to Tennessee in a very strange hiring. Tennessee was clearly getting desperate to hire a head coach to replace Lane Kiffin, and was turned down by numerous coaches.
The crazy Tennessee football fans may be part of that reason, since Kiffin was almost attacked and a riot broke out. I think another reason that not many wanted the Tennessee coaching job is that the SEC is no bead of roses. With a tough conference schedule against the best coaches in college football, some would hesitate to take that on.
I also wonder if Lane Kiffin did something to get the school on probation that we don’t know about yet. There is some reason that several coaches declined the Tennessee job. Derek Dooley must have discounted those reasons and jumped at the chance to be the new coach at Tennessee.
Derek Dooley played college ball at Virginia and also got a law degree from Georgia before turning to coaching. Derek Dooley is known as a good recruiting which he will have to be at Tennessee. There are not enough quality high school football players in the state of Tennessee, so the University has to recruit out of state.
