Will the Eagles make the Super Bowl?
January 1st 2009 13:03
The Philadelphia Eagles are on a roll in the NFL and momentum is a great thing to have in the Playoffs. The team overcame some bad losses to back into the Playoffs but they are here now and that is all that counts. And make no mistake about it, the Eagles can win the Super Bowl this season.
Philadelphia brings a rejuvenated Donovan McNabb and a healthy Brian Westbrook into the Post Season, not to mention a very nasty (in a good way) defense. Despite being ranked only 22nd in rushing (all stats for this article are from NFL.com) the Eagles can run the ball with Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter.
While the 2008 NFL Regular Season rushing totals are not the best, they are ranked 6th in points per game. The Eagles also are 6th in passing yards per game. Donovan McNabb has plenty of experience in throwing in bad weather which bodes well for a team that will have to play the Giants sooner or later. And DeSean Jackson brings some big play capability to the Eagles they have not had, since the Terrell Owens days.
Despite his love of the passing game, Head Coach Andy Reid knows running wins games in January. He will mix in runs by Brian Westbrook and Buckhalter with short passes making the team perform well with the ball. This offense can lead the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl this season.
What the Eagles really bring is defense and a good one under Defensive Coordinator Jim Johnson. They blitz everyone but the mascot and cause havoc with opposing offenses. For the 2008 NFL Regular Season the Eagles ranked no lower than 4th in all the major defensive categories. The fact that they are 4th in rushing defense bodes well for the Post Season.
Great Cornerbacks in Sheldon Brown and Asante Samuel can shut down receivers and big play threat Brian Dawkins is a beast. Dawkins had 3 sacks and forced 6 fumbles and he is a safety! And the Eagles have good return teams with DeSean Jackson returning a punt for a score and Quintin Demps bringing a kickoff back for one as well.
A solid offense and special teams combined with a devastating defense gives the Eagles a great chance to make it to the Super Bowl. Most of the team and all the coaches have Playoff and Super Bowl Experience and this bodes well for the team as well.
