THE game--Fifty years later
December 28th 2008 06:59
December 28 is a famous day in the NFL. For many, it's the day football surpassed baseball as the national pastime. Dec. 28, 1958 saw the NFL Championship between the New York Giants and (then) Baltimore Colts which resulted in the first televised overtime football game in history and gave rise to a new phrase: "sudden death."
Maybe you've seen archival footage of the famous sequence-- Baltimore took the ball in the overtime period with the game knotted at 17 and drove to the one yard line. On third down everyone expected a play to the left to set up a fourth down field goal but the Colts went right and Johnny Unitas handed the ball to Alan Ameche who struck pay dirt to give Baltimore a 23-17 victory and credibility to the NFL.

It's been fifty years and things are different--Ameche died in 1988, Unitas passed away in 2002, the Colts are in Indianapolis, Baltimore is represented by the Ravens, and both organizations have had their ups and downs. One thing is certain--we still like our football!
