What is Fantasy Football
December 4th 2008 01:37
Fantasy Football has really taken off with millions of people playing online. I started playing in the mid 1980’s, from adds in football magazines. I would phone in my lineup changes each week (how primitive) and also played in leagues with my friends. I thought Fantasy Football was new then but according to this wiki article it has been around since 1962 and was invented by people involved with the Oakland Raiders.
Ok to answer the question, what is Fantasy Football?
Fantasy Football is the answer to every guy and even some women’s desire to run a pro football team. Before the season us die hard players spend hours and hours planning our Fantasy Football Draft.
On Draft Day we pick a roster of real NFL players from the League. In a typical Fantasy Football League you take a certain number of players from these positions. Quarterback, Running Back, Wide Receiver, Kicker and Tight End. In most leagues you also pick a special teams/defense but in some leagues you pick specific defensive players or both.
You then select your starting Fantasy Football lineup each week. Whatever your starters do in their real NFL games, your team gets credit for. You get Fantasy Football points for the real NFL stats these guys amass in their Pro Football Games.
Some Leagues offer more points for rushing stats than passing. So in those you want top level Running Backs. Other Leagues are passing oriented so you want great Quarterbacks and Wide Receivers.
Often a League will allow you a “Flex” Position in your starting lineup. Usually your flex would be a running back or wide receiver. However some Leagues make the Flex either a Wide Receiver or Tight End.
The real die hard football fans play Salary Cap Leagues. In these just like the NFL each team is only allowed to spend so much “Money” (simulated in Fantasy Football Salary Cap Leagues) and thus spend even more time playing with their roster.
I only play in Free Fantasy Football Leagues and do it for the fun of it. But there are many play leagues where you put up money and the Champions get real trophy’s and lots of cash. I am content to play for bragging rights and the fun of the game itself at least for now. I am tempted to go for one that offers a chance to win some money, during next season.
The industry has blown up and now you see Fantasy Football shows on Television and listen to them on sports radio. There are writers out there who make a living only writing about Fantasy Sports (pick me, pick me) and it has gone from being a fad for nerds to mainstream fun in America.
