5 Greatest Quarterbacks in Super Bowl History
January 26th 2009 14:04
This article will list who I think are the 5 greatest quarterbacks in Super Bowl history. It may not all be about stats (which are from Pro-football-reference.com) or even wins. This is about who played the best in the big game. Keep in mind this article was written before the Arizona/ Pittsburgh game in Tampa Florida. So either Kurt Warner or Ben Roethlisberger could move up onto the list with a great game.
1- Joe Montana is of course the greatest quarterback in Super Bowl history. Montana holds the career passing rating, record for the Super Bowl which is 127.83 in 4 games. Montana never lost the big game and played well in all 4 victories for the San Francisco 49ers.
Joe Montana played for and won 4 NFL championships, and never threw an interception! He completed 83 of 122 passes for 1,142 yards and 11 scores with no passes intercepted. Joe even ran for 101 yards and 2 more scores in the big game.
2- Tom Brady is often compared to Joe Montana and their stats are similar. 4 games and four rings with no losses. Tom Brady has completed 100 of 155 passes with 7 touchdown passes and 1 interception. I find it interesting that neither Tom nor Joe were 1st round draft picks. Montana was a 3rd round pick out of Notre Dame for the 49ers and Tom was a 6th out of Michigan for the Patriots.
3-Phil Simms only played in one Super Bowl but he did a hell of a job. He holds the single game passing rating with 150.9. The Giants beat the Broncos 39 to 20 and Phil Simms completed an amazing 22 of 25 passes for 268 yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions. Simms who was not really known for his running ability added 25 yards on 3 carries rushing.
4- Jim Plunkett played in two Super Bowls for the Oakland Raiders, beating the Eagles and just murdering the Redskins. Jim Plunkett earns his ranking on the 5 greatest quarterbacks in Super Bowl History. Jim completed 29 of 46 passes for 433 yards and 4 touchdowns and no interceptions in the two games.
5-Troy Aikman won 3 championship rings for the Dallas Cowboys with two wins over the Bills and one over Pittsburgh. In the 3 games he completed 56 of 80 passes for 589 yards, 5 touchdown passes and 1 interception. Troy Aikman was money in big games and it is a shame that his career ended early due to injury.
I may get some complaints about Terry Bradshaw not making my list of the 5 best quarterbacks in Super Bowl history. And he does have 4 rings which alone maybe should have gotten him on here. But the Steelers then as now won with running the ball and playing defense. Bradshaw’s stats are not great with 4 interceptions against 9 touchdown passes. But Steeler fans I could have been mean and brought up Neil O’ Donnell but I wouldn’t do that to ya.
