How to fix the Dallas Cowboys

December 21st 2008 13:44
It is time for Jerry Jones to clean house in Dallas if he wants to return the Franchise to its former glory. I was a die hard Cowboys fan as a kid (1977 was the first season I paid attention to football) until Jerry Jones came in and fired Tom Landry. I am now a rare fan who pulls for 3 NFL teams. The Chiefs, the Panthers and the Cowboys are my favorites. So I am going to write an article to tell Jerry Jones how to fix his team.

First Wade Phillips must go and that bothers me because I think he is a good head coach and great defensive mind. However he isn’t the man to coach this team. Phillips was pretty much hired to keep the seat warm while Jason Garrett gets more experience as an offensive coordinator for the Cowboys.

The problem is Garrett has only done an average job at best with this high octane offense. The offensive line has struggled at times and so has Tony Romo in big games. To Garrett’s defense however injuries to Marion Barber and Felix Jones, and especially Tony Romo have hampered his efforts. Garrett probably deserves to keep his coordinator job but not to step up as head coach of America’s Team.

The Cowboys need a strong willed coach like they had in Bill Parcells. Somebody to keep the team in line when they get caught up in the various controversies that seem to follow the team. Bill Cowher would be an excellent choice but I doubt he would work for the meddling Jerry Jones. Russ Grimm should be at the top of the list if they don’t go with Jason Garrett.

This staff as a whole has underperformed and Phillips had to step in and coach the defense which did improve when he did. I really like Wade Wilson but he isn’t doing a good job with Romo as the quarterback’s coach. Tony Romo needs to calm down and learn when to throw the ball away. He plays a lot like Brett Favre in that he puts the ball where it shouldn’t be and gets too many interceptions on dumb plays. The difference is that Brett Favre could make enough big plays in important games to negate that to some extent. The Cowboys do need to find a backup quarterback a Brian Griese type who could step in and play but know his role as a backup. Rex Grossman, J.P. Losman and Byron Leftwich are scheduled to be free agents next season. Any of this group would do well if they would settle for a number two job.

Tony Romo has the talent to succeed if he can get over making dumb mistakes in crucial situations. So I don’t think Dallas needs to look for a replacement for him at this time. However Terrell Owens must go, he has worn out his welcome with all the distractions he is causing. They should trade Owens to some sucker, err team looking for big plays

That bothers me too as I have always been a fan of T.O. because of his talent for the big play and desire to do well. He is eat up with the dumbass and his distractions are outweighing his talent. The stage has been set for this already with the trade for Roy Williams. So far the trade has looked like a dud but Williams will improve with a training camp in the Cowboys system under his belt. Patrick Crayton is also a great wide receiver that few have even heard of. He can step up into a starter’s role, Crayton makes big plays. Even if the Cowboys decide to leave Crayton as a good 3 receiver they could pick up another starter to go with Williams. Hank Baskett is going to be a free agent and would make a great addition to the receiving corps and weaken a division opponent, the Eagles.

The defense is pretty good at times but needs a new coordinator and some defensive backs. Another pass rushing to go with Ware would be a great addition as well. But on the whole the defense is fine with some good coaching about how to tackle. Adding Free Agent Bertrand Berry or Terrell Suggs (if they can afford him) would make the line even better. Jones should forget Pacman Jones and try to sign Nnamdi Asomugha of the Oakland Raiders if he isn’t franchised. Asomugha is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. Adding him would defiantly help fix the Dallas Cowboys.

So Dallas isn’t doomed if they add a few good free agents and some coaches. There is young talent like Felix Jones and Tashard Choice to build a great run offense around, and that would take pressure off choker Tony Romo. So Mr. Jones should you accidently read this, then take my advice and fix America’s team!

I've never looked at the Cowboys the same since the departure of Tom Landry!

It was time for him to go but I didn't like how it was done.
