Footballdogz.com player spotlight-John Elway

June 26th 2008 23:03
From time to time I will have a spotlight post on a current or former NFL or College football player. These posts will be called Footballdogz.com spotlight posts. I will talk about highlights of their career and my thoughts on that player. If they are retired I will try to include a they are doing now part to the post.

Footballdogz.com player spotlight on John Elway.

When John Elway came out of Stanford University in the 1983 draft, he ticked a lot of football purists off. He was not only a great college quarterback, he was also a great baseball player.

This led to him dictating which NFL team’s he would be willing to play for and which he wouldn’t. He had played 2 years in the Baseball Minor’s for the New York Yankees. He used this as leverage to get out of playing for the Baltimore Colts. He threatened to play baseball and the Colts traded him to the Denver Broncos.

John Elway was greeted as a savior by the rabid Denver fans and for a while didn’t live up to the billing. He struggled at first then became known as a great scrambling quarterback with a big arm who couldn’t win the big game. The Broncos lost 3 Super Bowls with Elway at the helm.

Later the Broncos built a better team around John Elway and he helped them flourish, winning the Super Bowl in his last 2 seasons. He then retired while on top of his game and Denver hasn’t been to the Super Bowl since.

What I remember most about Elway was that strong right arm, he could really whip the ball down the field. Another thing was the quarterback draw play he got so many yards and touchdowns with. He looked gangly and clumsy but he could run when he wanted to.

In 234 NFL games John Elway put up some really remarkable stats. According to Profootballreference.com, he completed 4,123 of 7,250 passes for 51,475 yards. He also threw 300 touchdown passes against only 226 interceptions. He also added 3,407 yards rushing and 33 touchdowns.

John Elway still lives in the Denver area and is involved in several business opportunities. He has his hand in football as well by being one of the owners of the
