The National Football League has had some interesting free agent signings this off season. Taking the information from
I will go down the list of each position. In this post I will discuss the notable NFL free agency signings for 2008. I will break it up into several postings here at Footballdogz.com over the next few days.
Quarterbacks
Mark Brunell has gone from the Washington Redskins to the New Orleans Saints to backup Drew Brees. I am not sure that Brunell would be the answer for the long haul if Brees goes down. But he could mop up or start a game or two and still do well.
Daunte Culpepper remains unsigned at this time. I think if some quarterback tanks or goes down to injury, we may see Culpepper play again. However injuries a loss of skills and off field problems may see him out of the NFL.
David Carr former flop with the Texans and Panthers has signed to backup Eli Manning for the Giants. I think Carr got a bum deal in Carolina as he was injured most of the season and at least showed some toughness.
Marques Tuiasosopo has signed a free agency contract to return to the Oakland Raiders. He was once thought to be an potential starter during his first stint with the Raiders. But he has bummed around the league for 7 seasons as a backup with various teams.
Running Backs
Shaun Alexander is currently a free agent in the NFL. He has had some injury problems and may be burned out from overuse. The Bengals and the Saints have shown some interest in him.
Michael Turner formerly the best backup running back in football with the Chargers is with Atlanta now. The Falcons suck and they are reeling from their coaching situation last season. But look for Turner to shine this season and have a great year. I think he will be the best free agent pickup for the 2008 season.
DeShaun Foster former franchise back for the Carolina Panthers will now help Frank Gore, in San Francisco. Foster could really do well in a part time roll. It would keep his risk of injuries down and let him be fresh when playing. Of course he didn’t do that well sharing carries in Carolina but we will see what happens.
Warrick Dunn hauled butt out of Atlanta when Turner was signed. He returns to his roots with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I think he will add a couple of seasons to his career as a 3rd down back with his old team.
Julius Jones has left Big D to join the Seattle Seahawks and will probably be their starter. After losing carries to Marion Barber Jones has something to prove. I expect him to have a breakout season with the Seahawks.
Dominic Rhodes returns to the Colts after a short stint with the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders in a class act gave him his release early so he could sign with another team.
Derrick Ward who was one of several running backs to step up, in replacing Tiki Barber, has resigned with the New York Giants. Barber was not missed at all as the Giants won a Super Bowl without him.
