A TRUE freshman at quarterback
August 28th 2009 19:11
In this day and age of "red-shirt sophomores" and "fifth year seniors" it's more than a little unusual to hear about a TRUE freshman starting in the NCAA at any position. It's a little more unusual to hear about them starting at quarterback and it's even more unusual to hear about it being done at a big time football school. However, that's the way it stands right now as the USC Trojans look forward to their opening September 5. Matt Barkley will be making school history when he takes the field against the Spartans of San Jose State.
Barkely is no stranger to success as a freshman. In his first year at Mater Dei High School of Santa Ana, California, he led the Monarchs to the playoffs while passing for 10 touchdowns and accumulating over 1,600 yards passing.
USC has been a steppingstone to professional careers for recent quarterbacks such as Carson Palmer and Mark Sanchez. Will Barkley continue this tradition? A college career is usually four years but if past success is any indication, we'll know the answer to that question in three or even two years.
Until then, the 6-3 220 pound Barkley will keep scouts salivating!
