Draft guide for your fantasy football team
August 17th 2009 12:02
Ok guys and gals it's about that time again, drafting for the 2009 fantasy football season has already began in some leagues. I am a long time NFL fan and player of the game we used to call rotisserie football years ago. This article contains a 2009 fantasy football draft guide; follow it to your league championship! If you want to see more fantasy football mock drafts search Associatedcontent.com or check out thehazean.com. Thanks for reading my 2009 fantasy football draft guide.
Adrian Peterson is the man and should be the number one fantasy football draft pick in every league in 2009. As you will see here Adrian Peterson ranks number one in my 2009 running back rankings, of course. Peterson can run and catch the ball out of the backfield. No matter what the Vikings have upgraded at quarterback with either Favre or Sage Rosenfels. Peterson should get lots of touches and score 12 to 15 touchdowns in 2009.
Drew Brees is the best fantasy football quarterback heading into the 2009 season. He will be the 2nd pick in many selection meetings this year. Usually I have the top two or three running backs before going with a quarterback in my draft guides. But the running back by committee approach is lessoning the value of some running backs. Drew Brees should give you about 4,800 passing yards and 30 touchdown tosses in 2009.
Michael Turner came out of Ladainian Tomlinson's shadow when he joined the Atlanta Falcons in 2008. He then had a huge breakout season in the NFL and should be almost as good this year. Matt Ryan will have another training camp under his belt and has a new weapon in Tony Gonzalez. So I expect Turner to have a few less carries but still produce 1,500 yards and 12 to 14 scores this season.
DeAngelo Williams blew up last season with the Carolina Panthers with huge numbers. I like the kid and cover the Panthers for a website so I follow him a bit. The Panthers are in a tough division and have never had back to back playoff seasons. DeAngelo Williams shares carries with Jonathan Stewart as well. Look for DeAngelo Williams to put up about 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2009.
Peyton Manning is just too good to discount even with the loss of Marvin Harrison and the return of Tom Brady. Manning is my pick here in the 2009 fantasy football draft guide.
Tom Brady is back from injury and should have a good season. He still has adequate weapons in New England but will have to shake off some rust. It would help Tom Brady if the Patriots can muster a ground game.
Larry Fitzgerald is worth a shot here because he is just that damn good. I don't expect the Cardinals to match their Super Bowl season but they should be competitive in a weak division. Fitzgerald will still have Anquan Boldin helping him out and Kurt Warner throwing the passes.
Aaron Rodgers showed he can be a good NFL quarterback after replacing Brett Favre but must stay healthy in 2009. Green Bay has some decent weapons on offense and Rodgers will have another training camp as the starter.
Thomas Jones should get a lot of touches under new coach Rex Ryan who will want a ball control offense. The Jets issues at quarterback will hurt Thomas Jones some but also force the team to rely on him.
Andre Johnson is the best wide receiver in the NFL in my opinion but he plays on a suspect team. Look for him to continue to jell with Matt Schaub and have another great fantasy football season in 2009.
Philip Rivers just needs some quality wide receivers and will be an elite quarterback in the National Football League. Rivers will be helped by Darren Sproles use more since he can bust a screen pass into long yardage for the Chargers.
Kurt Warner is old and probably won't repeat his 2008 magic but he still has weapons at his deposal that make most quarterbacks drool. Having Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin and playing in the weak AFC West should inflate his numbers.
Matt Forte had a solid rookie season at running back for the Chicago Bears in 2008. The trade for Jay Cutler gives defense's other things to think about than Forte. I think you will be please if Matt Forte is on your 2009 fantasy football team.
Steve Slaton plays for those same bad Texans as Andre Johnson but can be a force in 2009. He runs the ball and catches passes equally well in their west coast offense. Slaton should give you at least 1,100 yards and 8-12 scores.
Anquan Boldin is mad at still being a Cardinal and will be playing with a chip on his shoulder in 2009. I would not however draft both Cardinal wideouts on the same team if the possibility arises, in case Warner is injured.
Clinton Portis is a workhouse back for Jim Zorn's Washington Redskins but he is getting older and more injury prone. But he is the best that the Skins have to offer and may have a decent season or two left in him.
Randy Moss should be back to form with the return of Tom Brady but ya never really know about him. If his head is in the game he should make a good addition to your 2009 league.
Calvin Johnson sadly plays for Detroit but still manages great numbers. He makes this 2009 fantasy football guide at 18 even if he has to break in rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Roddy White had a breakout year in Atlanta with Matt Ryan at quarterback. I don't expect White to be quite as good but he is still worth a look here.
Donovan McNabb is old and not overly happy to be in the "city of brotherly love" but his play has been steady after being benched briefly in 2008. Look for McNabb to have a solid season on an improved Philadelphia Eagles team.
