Haley named as new Chiefs Coach
February 6th 2009 21:24
As expected by most of us the Kansas City Chiefs have hired former Arizona Cardinal offensive coordinator Toddy Haley to be their next head coach. Haley probably most famous for his sideline shouting match with Anquan Boldin, replaces the fired Herman Edwards.
New Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli has worked with Haley previously with the New York Jets. Haley also has worked as an assistant coach for the Dallas Cowboys, and Chicago Bears in addition to the Jets.
Todd Haley as the new coach of the Chiefs inherits a team that played badly in 2008 with a 2-14 record. However I don’t feel (and there is bias as I am a Chiefs fan) that the team played as bad as their record.
They possibly discovered a quarterback in Tyler Thigpen whom I think deserves to have the starting job in 2009. Veteran running back Larry Johnson missed a chunk of the season due to team and league suspensions. He will probably be dealt on or before draft day. All world tight end Tony Gonzalez has expressed interest in being traded in the past. However his big beef was with the former general manager Carl Peterson who was fired a few weeks before Herman Edwards.
The Chiefs need to rebuild on both sides of the ball, especially the offensive and defensive lines. Unfortunately for Chiefs fans, Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald won’t be joining Toddy Haley in Kansas City.
I do not think the Chiefs should trade for Matt Cassel who was franchise tagged by the Patriots. He hasn’t proved to me that he is more than a product of a great system, and would cost the Chiefs a minimum of their 2009 NFL first round draft choice. As I have in my 2009 NFL mock draft, that choice should be spent on an offensive lineman.
Dwayne Bowe could flourish in Haley’s system as could Tyler Thigpen who played well on a bad team. Thigpen came in when Brody Croyle and Damon Huard suffered injuries. Despite no starting experience the former Costal Carolina quarterback did fairly well. In 2008 Thigpen completed 230 of 420 passes for 2,608 yards with 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions according to NFL.com.
Bowe had 86 catches for 1,022 yards and 7 scores. Rookie running back Jamaal Charles rushed for 357 yards and a fine 5.3 yards per attempt average, but failed to score. Charles is a scat back probably not suited for full time action. If Larry Johnson is traded, the Chiefs will need to draft a power type running back. Lack of a running game was Arizona’s only offensive weakness in their Super Bowl run. But Haley has a good start if he can quickly build an offensive line. And I think naming Todd Haley as the new Chiefs head coach was a good move.
