Herm Edwards has been fired as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in a not unexpected move. Edwards a former head coach of the New York Jets led the Chiefs down bad path as their head coach. Herm Edwards had a 15-34 record during his 3 seasons as the Chiefs coach according to profootballtalk.com.
Edwards had little talent to try to meld of late though and general manager Carl Peterson was fired earlier this season. Larry Johnson’s off the field problems may have contributed to Herm Edwards being fired.
But the biggest reason the Chiefs slipped was failure to replace a once great offensive line that got old and got out. Trading defensive end Allen to the Vikings didn’t help a bad defense either. By all accounts Herm Edwards was a good guy but not much of a head coach. The team didn’t quit on him and played hard for most of their games in 2008. But the talent wasn’t there and neither was the coaching.
Right now there are conflicting reports that Mike Shanahan is set to replace Herm Edwards as the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. I don’t think new general manger Scott Pelosi would have fired Herm Edwards at this time, if he didn’t have a definite coaching candidate in mind for the Chiefs. But I am not sure if it will be Shanahan who probably wants player control which Pelosi would be stupid to give him.
