Is anyone ready for some BCS controversy? I know I am.

October 28th 2008 00:13
Well, there are a few things that are certain. The sun will always rise in the east. The Undertaker will always win at Wrestlemania (I'm a wrestling fan...sue me) and the BCS will never, ever have a clean winner. This years contestants include a cavalcade of who's who in college football:

#1 The Texas Longhorns!!! Remaining schedule: @ Texas Tech, vs Baylor, @ Kansas, vs Texas A&M, possible Big XII Championship

Prognosis: If the Horns can get past Texas Tech this weekend then they are home free until the conference championship game against, most likely the Missouri Tigers.

#2 The Alabama Crimson Tide!!! Remaining schedule: vs Arkansas St., @ LSU, vs Mississippi State, vs Auburn, possible SEC championship

Prognosis: All eyes will be on their trip to Death Valley next week against LSU, if they get past that then they are home free until the SEC title game which will either be against Florida or a rematch against Georgia. The Tide have the most difficult road to the title game...and may get derailed along the way.

#3 The Penn State Nittany Lions!!! Remaining Schedule: @ Iowa, vs Indiana, vs Michigan St.

Prognosis: The Lions may be as close to home free for an undefeated season (keep an eye on that Iowa game). They are in the unfortunant position of having to hope for a loss from above, but I think that they are in quite an enviable position...and also who wouldn't want to see JoePa in the big game.

Also in the Hunt:

Oklahoma: Remaining games: vs Nebraska, at Texas A&M, vs Texas Tech, @ Oklahoma State, possible Big XII championship
Prognosis: Oklahoma has 2 remaining games against top 10 opponents and will need an unlikely Texas loss to get into the hunt.

USC: Remaining games: vs Washington, vs California, @ Stanford, vs Notre Dame, @ UCLA

Prognosis: USC may be home free, but watch out for that Stanford game. They also need a great deal of help...that they may not get.

Georgia: Remaining games: vs Florida, @ Kentucky, @ Auburn, vs Georgia Tech, possible SEC championship
Prognosis: They have an elimination game against Florida on Saturday. If they win that, they are still very much in the hunt for the national championship, especially because they could have a potential rematch with Alabama in the SEC championship. However, there is no room for error.

Texas Tech: Remaining games: vs Texas, vs Oklahoma State, @ Oklahoma, vs Baylor possible Big XII championship
Prognosis: They have the toughest schedule from now on in. If they win out...they deserve to be in the national championship without a doubt.

Florida: Remaining schedule: @ Georgia, @ Vanderbilt, vs South Carolina, vs Citadel, @ Florida State, possible SEC championship
Prognosis: They have three big games (Georgia, Vanderbilt, and Florida State) that are all on the road. One loss and they are done. If they win out, they deserve serious consideration for the national championship

Oklahoma State: Remaining games: vs Iowa State, @ Texas Tech, @ Colorado, vs Oklahoma, possible Big XII championship
prognosis: They have 2 big games (Texas Tech and Oklahoma) and they have absolutly no room for error.

Final Verdict: I predict that either Texas remains unbeaten and that Alabama trips up either against LSU or in the SEC title game. Penn State will win out and JoePa will make it to the big game. Out of all of the other teams in the hunt, I believe that Oklahoma has the best chance...except that they would need Texas to lose and I don't think that it will happen.

BCS championship: Texas vs PSU

other bowls:
Rose: USC vs Alabama
Orange: Oklahoma vs Georgia
Sugar: Utah vs Texas Tech
Fiesta: Boise St. vs Florida

Those are my predictions for the BCS up to this point. I believe that this year, above all years is when there should be some consideration of a playoff. It will not happen but this will inevitably be another year full of BCS dispute...and hopefully some worthwhile games.

Until next time,

Right on! I figure PSU-Texas also although I had a problem with Texas vaulting to No. 1 after that Oklahoma win. But, that's life and now we'll deal with the polls as they are!
