Jets end Titans undefeated season hopes
November 24th 2008 12:12
The Tennessee Titans are no longer undefeated in the 2008 NFL season, and they were done in by the New York Jets in a 34 to 13 blowout. Most of us pro football fans figured the Titans would lose eventually but to the Steelers later in the season. I expected the Titans to easily handle the Jets and I am sure lots of other people felt the same way.
‘
But the Jets who made a large roster change in the offseason are coming together and playing very well. And their spanking of the undefeated Titans shows they are in the hunt for being the AFC’s top team in 2008. To beat the Titans at home was even more surprising.
The vaunted Tennessee running game was shut down by a stingy Jets defense and this crippled the Titan offense. By getting ahead early the Jets took Tennessee away from their comfort zone of running the ball to set up safe passes. With 45 yards rushing on only 11 attempts this isn’t Titan Football.
They simply are not equipped to be a big time passing come from behind type of offense. Kerry Collins has done a good job after replacing Vince Young, but he isn’t a 400 yard passing type quarterback anymore.
The New York Jets played more like Tennessee than the Titans did. Brett Favre completed 25 of 32 for a modest 224 yards. Brett also had two touchdown passes and one interception.
But the key was the Jets own running game which is not considered much by most fans with Favre on the roster now. The Jets rushed 39 times for 192 yards with Leon Washington scoring twice including on a 61 yard run, finishing with 82 yards on 8 attempts. Thomas Jones was the workhorse with 96 yards on 27 tough time consuming attempts. And that was one big key yes the Jets had a 409 to 281 total yards advantage but time of possession won the game. All that running controlled the clock for 40:30 compared to 19:30 for the Titans.
Brett Favre is learning he doesn’t have to be a gunslinger with the Jets and that ball control and a low number of turnovers can win games. Seems like a common theme with the league’s best teams, Giants, Titans, Panthers and now the Jets.
By ending the Titans undefeated season they may have even done them a favor. Now Tennessee can go back to playing football and not deal with media and fan pressure that was mounting with each win.
