Will we have a Giants/Jets Super Bowl?
November 29th 2008 01:12
The question on a lot of minds is will we have a New York Giants against the New York Jets Super Bowl? Or as I should say a double shot of New Jersey in the big game since both teams actually play in that state. The answer is sure we could have a Giants vs. Jets Super Bowl but I find it unlikely.
I think the Giants have a better shot at the Big Game than the Jets do. They are clearly the class of the NFC and don’t fear any potential playoff opponents. With the experience of winning it last year and an apparent continued hunger, they are the favorites in my opinion.
The Panthers are considered by some to be the biggest obstacle in the Giants way. But the Panthers don’t play well against physical teams, neither do the Dallas Cowboys. I think if the Redskins make the playoffs they would give the Giants the hardest game to win.
Now the New York Jets started out slow but have really been bringing it on of late. They have won 5 in a row and gave the previously unbeaten Tennessee Titans their first loss of the season. Between that and beating (even without Brady) the New England Patriots, the Jets have arrived as an elite AFC team.
It took a few weeks for new players, Brett Favre, Calvin Pace, Kris Jenkins, Alan Fanaca and Damon Woody to jell into the Jets System. Now that all these guys have hit their stride the Jets are as dangerous as any team in the AFC.
But I feel that the Jets have more to fear in the playoffs than the Giants do. They could possibly play the Colts (my actual AFC pick for the Super Bowl) the Steelers and the Titans again.
Don’t count out any team with Peyton Manning on it in the playoffs. The Steelers bring a solid rushing game when healthy and a pure nasty defense. The Titans are probably still the best AFC team. However the Jets did expose their lack of a come from behind passing game.
But if Brett Favre can keep his mistakes down and not try to gun sling his way to victory the New York Jets could indeed reach the Super Bowl and play the Giants. Thomas Jones is a very capable workhorse running back with Super Bowl experience (Bears) and Leon Washington is a small game breaker running back that every team wants to have.
The Jets are second in the NFL (as I write this in week 13) in points scored, 9th in rushing and 16th in passing yards, that is good enough to be strong in the playoffs. What really perks my interest is that they are 3rd in the league in rushing defense. Only giving up around 78 yards a game. This is very important in cold weather playoff games as the Steelers and Titans both rely heavily on the run game.
But being ranked 26th in passing defense in the NFL is not a good thing if the Colts come to town. However their 12th place ranking in points given up is certainly respectable. They could beat the Colts but I think Manning would light them up and win the game for the Colts.
If we do have a Jets/Giants Super Bowl I think that it will be a good game. The Big Game would probably not be a blowout by either team. But I do think the Giants would beat the Jets in the Super Bowl, due to a better all around team. All stats come from NFL.com.
