I was a little surprised that Ryan Leaf, err Ryan Mallet was drafted by the New England Patriots. I had Mallet going to the Bengals in my mock draft, and never suspected he would be a Patriot.
Ryan Mallet has an incredible arm and apparently is football smart but off the field concerns such as drug allegations lowered his draft stock. He is also very slow of foot and historically quarterbacks that tall don’t make it in the NFL.
I think it was a brilliant move for the Patriots to draft Ryan Mallet. He will have time to learn the pro game behind Tom Brady. If Mallet is a gem then the team can either trade him in a year or two or even replace Tom Brady with Ryan Mallet when Brady gets too expensive.
If Ryan Mallet does not work out then the Patriots are not out much. One thing for sure Ryan Mallet will keep his nose clean in New England if he wants a pro career. The coaching staff and players won’t put up with any crap out of him.
