Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen

May 31st 2010 15:18
A good question for Panthers fans is who will win the Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen quarterback battle. It’s a bit early to tell but I will give my two cents on it now anyway. Panthers fans don’t really have much experience in quarterback controversy as the team stuck with Jake Delhomme for several seasons. As you can see here I thought it was time for Jake to go when he melted down in the playoffs against Arizona.

I like Matt Moore and think he has earned the right to start in 2010 for the Carolina Panthers. In 2009 Matt Moore got his chance when Jake Delhomme suffered an injury and the team seemed to respond to him. Some say the Panthers had no pressure on them and that is why he played well. I don’t really care, Matt Moore should beat out Jimmy Clausen for the job unless it’s clear Clausen is very superior.

Even the little bit more of experience that Matt Moore has over Jimmy Clausen should give him the advantage. If Clausen does play well in the preseason then that is great for Carolina as most teams use at least two quarterbacks in a season due to injury.

Jimmy Clausen was a good quarterback at Notre Dame but so was Quinn and he tanked. Clausen is supposed to have off field concerns and a quarterback with a bad attitude isn’t a good thing. Ben Roethlisberger is under fire for being a general asshole and not just his alleged sexual assaults. I think Jimmy Clausen fell to the 2nd round over attitude concerns.

Clausen isn’t learning a new offense as the Panthers run the same thing that Notre Dame did. I had Clausen ranked first on my list of the best quarterbacks in the 2010 NFL draft, as you can read here.

I just don’t want to see Matt Moore screwed over just to play a rookie quarterback. I think Moore Will win the quarterback battle for the Panthers due to his advantage in experience and skills.

The legendary Mike Holmgren said last month to Mike and Mike in the Morning, "In a perfect world, the rookie quarterback would not have to start". He is right. I think Moore should start, but if he struggles Clausen should get a shot at it. I really like Moore. THE Darren Sharper and I both agree that he is pretty good. By the way, I gave up on Delhomme when he had Tommy John surgery in 2007.
