Shawne Merriman out for the season
August 26th 2008 01:43
Shawne Merriman will miss the entire 2008 NFL season and possibly never play again. He has torn ligaments in his knee. This can be a devastating loss to the San Diego Chargers and their Super Bowl hopes.
Merriman is a beast with 187 tackles and 39.5 sacks in his NFL career. His presence demands attention and helps the other Charger defensive players. There are no easy solutions to this problems such as the Redskin move to get Jason Taylor to cover injuries earlier. But Jason Taylor is also injured now and may miss the first regular season game.
Even the Giants loss of Osi Umenyoria will probably be offset with the return of Michael Strahan who is in talks with the team. Umenyoria also suffered a season ending left knee injury, in a preseason game against the Jets.
Peyton Manning, Matt Hassleback Tom Brady and Charlie Batch are among the quarterbacks afflicted by injury this offseason. Time and time again we see this at the start of every season.
Now some of these are training camp issues but some came in needless preseason games. The NFL makes regular season money off these games so they have as many as possible. But I think there should be three preseason games and no more. This would cut down potential injury in games that don’t count. We won’t see this of course at it would cost the league money.
