Mike Martz gets his last chance in Chicago

April 13th 2010 23:47
Mike Martz has a last chance now that he is the offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears. Martz was the offensive mastermind who helped Dick Vermeil establish “The greatest show on turf” as the Rams offense was called in their heyday.

As head coach of the Rams, Mike Martz won 85 games and lost 32 and won three division and one conference championship. I wrote this asking if Mike Martz would be a head coach again when the Rams let him go.

Mike Martz had two uneventful stops with the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers as offensive coordinator. However in both stops his quarterbacks improved and the Bears hope Jay Cutler will under Mike Martz as well.

Nobody really wanted the Bears offensive coordinator job because Coach Lovie Smith is probably going to be fired after the season and his staff with him. Mike Martz desperately wanted back in the NFL and now has his last chance to prove he can still coach.

I think that if Cutler improves under Martz but that the team sucks on defense, that Martz may be the next head coach of the Chicago Bears. But for Cutler to improve the Bears need offensive linemen and wide receivers in that order. As you can read here the Bears were very active in free agency, but no quality wide receivers or offensive linemen were added.

For Mike Martz’s offense to work he needs the quarterbacks to take long drops and the wide receivers to get down the field. This offense is nothing new to the NFL and was at one time known as “Air Coryell” and as you can read here, is the real west coast offense.

I wonder if Mike Martz will run the ball even in the winter weather in Chicago. He will have to and has some weapons in the running game. I do feel that Mike Martz will make the most of his last chance, with the Chicago Bears.

Mike Martz's hiring is a very interesting subject. Now, it could hurt Jay Cutler for this season because Cutler must learn one of the most difficult offensive strategies in NFL history. However, it will help out Cutler in the long run. Mike Martz can still coach. On a side note, I would hate to see a great guy like Lovie Smith get fired. But with Jerry Angelo, business is business even more so in recent years. Good job on alluding to the huge free agency.
