Mike Shanahan's next job?
January 1st 2009 13:18
Mike Shanahan makes no bones about it, he wants to coach again in the NFL. In this video from NFL.com he talks about not wanting to get out of the League and winning another Super Bowl. And I think he should get another chance to be a Head Coach in the National Football League. But I also think the decision to fire him was the right one by Bronco’s owner Pat Bowlen.
Sometimes people get complacent or fall into a rut when in the same job for a long period of time. Mike Shanahan was the Head Coach of the Denver Broncos for 14 seasons. But his success of late has been not so great. I think he had too much on his plate as both Coach and being in charge of personnel.
Now I am sure he feels he has something to prove and this tends to rekindle the fire in people. Also his coaching career should end on such a sour note and I don’t think it will. With so many teams looking for new leadership the list of candidates will shrink quickly.
Mike Shanahan should get another Head Coaching job but not a General Manager position in the NFL. He has a great offensive mind and his West Coast offense is hardly outdated. His version of the West Coast offense relies on a heavy dose of the running game with zone blocking. With the right players he can flourish with this system, remember there isn’t that much wrong with the way Denver played offense this season.
There have already been firings of coaches in Detroit, Cleveland, and with the New York Jets. More may be to come in Kansas City, Cincinnati and possibly even Dallas. And the way the NFL is these days who knows what other teams could make a sudden change.
I think the Kansas City Chiefs should hire Mike Shanahan as their next Head Coach. He would be a good fit there, providing he can get a good defensive staff. His work with Quarterbacks like John Elway, Jake Plummer and Jay Cutler shows he could vastly improve Tyler Thigpen. If the Chiefs keep Larry Johnson he may reestablish his career in a run first, West Coast Offense.
Currently the Chiefs are looking for a General Manager and the longer this takes, the better the chance they will just keep Herm Edwards another season. But hiring Mike Shanahan would be a good move for them, even if they have to add a General Manager later.
He would bring name recognition and a coach with Super Bowl Rings (not too many of them on the market) and National Media attention. Many people would be interested in the Bronco’s-Chiefs twice a year games if Shanahan was coaching against his old team.
No matter who hires him, I expect to see him as a NFL head coach in the next season or two. He deserves a chance to hold that title again and I think he will get one.
